In a couple of weeks time will be driving from Milan to Venice. Would like to take a detour to a car accessory type store - as you do. What are the Italian brands/chains I should look for so I can load them in the SatNav ?

Hi -Italy doesn't have Big Brand chain stores ,they are all individual
outlets. You will need to do some research to which are local.
Most are quite boring ,as the law of the land does not allow any mods
i.e bigger wheels ,exaust mods and engine urgrades. Even the days of
the sooped up vespas, motorinos (mopeds) have come to an end.
Any cars you see in that area that have been modified will be on
Swiss or German plates.
The local plod will more than happely give you a ticket if your car
is too noisey. but wont bother if you are doing 200kph on the Autostrada.
That's Italia for you .

Thanks very much, that's good to know - and explains why Google shows nothing.

Try specifying Autoricambi in the various cities on route eg. Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Treviso....

I have a friend in the Piquet GP2 team based in Padova, I can check with his guys if you let me know the marque.

Just got back and to answer my own question for future searchers - as suggested above there is very little in the way of car tuning stuff and very few cars tuned - the only parts I found were in the Obi DIY stores and then were limited to things like wipers and batteries.

Drove almost 1000km all over North Italy, Autostrada and mountain passes. There is one big difference in driving since I was last there 5 years ago - Autostrada speeds have come down from about 160 to 140kmH. My Italian friends told me this was due to the introduction of average speed cameras.

Funny thing is old habits don't change and if you are going a bit less than 140 in the outside lane there will be someone right up your chuffer until you move over but when you do they just inch past rather than zoom off as they once did !

There's a "norauto" I think that's the name by my local iper. Belforte, just north of Varese.

These guys are on Lake Garda, so is a lunch stop option that doesn't take you out of your way.
