Hi all, Me, the wife and the little one have a hol booked in July in Sorrento. We are arriving at Napoli (Naples) airport and are undecided whether to take a shuttle/taxi to the hotel which is 70km away or public transport (unlikely with a little one in tow) or possibly hire a car for the week and drive down.

The shuttle/taxi services from what ive heard are notoriously expensive (e.120 each way!) so a hire car for the week seems good value as a Ford Focus can be had for as little as e.280 which would give us the flexibility of being able to go and drive where we want, when we want. However my only reservation is that ive never really driven on the continent before (except for France many moons ago) so im not sure what to expect or whether its a good idea....? Dont want to be running round in circles or getting lost just to get to the hotel and back etc

Any suggestion and advice would be greatly appreciated

Word of advice. you don't even want to think about driving a hire car in and around the area of Naples! They will steal the car ,your wife and your kid ! Oh and your money !
PS I am Italian, and I would think twice about driving in that Bandit
part of Italy.
Take a taxi and enjoy your hols.

Louis.

Agree with the above....

The majority of my family are Italian and we come from Amalfi, Ravello & Atrani (amongst other palces throughout Italy). To get down there from Naples Airport we would go the long way completely steering clear of the Naples area and coastal road from Naples City.

Taxi is better and it is very simple to get public transport down there anyway....it has become more tourist friendly over the years.

Anyway in Atrani and Amalfi in the summer, using your car is a nightmare anyway as there is no place to park after dinner as there are a lot of Festa's on. Easy to walk around anyway...

Lovely beaches there..

Stayed in Sorrento for a week last October, having flown into Naples. We had a coach transfer to the hotel; it became clear very quickly that this was the right choice! Even walking around Sorrento and watching the locals drive was a scary experience. They all seemed to have their own interpretation of whether there were any rules of the road and, if so, what they were!
There are plenty of trips available by coach and boat to most of the places of interest. Taxis seemed to be on the expensive side though.

Thank you for the advice guys, a bit of a search on the forum shows that Naples is a pretty nasty place at the best of times so its perhaps better that we dont hire a car, however Sorrento (near where we are staying) seems to be a beautiful place and perhaps we can hire a car from there and stay within the vicinity?

We're staying in Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, near Sorrento. Any recommendations on caoches/taxis that are reputable to travel from Naples to the hotel. Links would be handy. Thanks all
