You will find decent accomodations in the various hotels of the area.

Hmmm...don't take it personally.... but knowing how fickle Italian women are... you're going to need at least a 430 cab. dThinking about it, a 599 would be better or to be fairly sure of some attention.. an Enzo.

a few years ago. Don't know what its like now mind you. The carpark is in the open air but is accessed by a barrier underneath the hotel (you can see the road emerging if you look at the photos)

dIf you're going down the coast road from San M to Genoa, there are some naughty roads a bit further on.
First of all you'll get the full benefit of all the tunnels (147 I think?) on the A12!
Then either carry on a bit further to La Spezia and take the A15 to Parma. It's the wildest piece of Motorway I've found in Italy: 90 degree bends out of tunnels, massive straights, more tunnels, off camber bends, totally insane!
Or get off the A12 at Sestri Levante and take the S523 towards Borgo Val Di Taro. It's the Cento Croce and Cisa passes. Lovely scenery and a billion tight bends. When you get to Borgo you can head for the A15 and Parma.
Either way the A15 will connect to the A1 and take you to Milano and it's a bit more interesting than the A7, which I guess you're taking.

Can't help you if you want to go directly North. The route I suggested via La Spezia will give you a millions tunnels, great views and some "interesting" motorway but it'll add about 90 miles to your journey. dps .... now need a good road(s) north from savona to como
Depends if you enjoy travelling or arriving.
One alternative is to go to Genova and then take the S45 towards Piacenza and pick up the A1 for Milano. Not as good as my suggested route but better than taking the A21/A26/A7 direct to Milano.

Pontremoli - Fornovo is a nice 2 hour drive over the Cisa if you fancy it too - you miss about 4 junctions on the A15 but you'll have done the best bits if you're coming from La Spezia
