Drive straight down through France and through the Mont Blanc tunnel
Edit: just checked and it's at around 12-1300m. Without going a very long way around I can't think of a lower route.
Actually it is almost 1300m on the French side of the tunnel (it is a bit downhill for me, I generally come from Italy) but almost 1400m on the Italian side so it is a big higher than requested from OPEdit: just checked and it's at around 12-1300m. Me too I am thinking at alternatives, it is possible to avoid any altitude going down to Mediterran sea and following Italian coast but it would become a quite longer trip...
Many thanks to you both for information.
We travelled different route back from south France last year on advice of sat nav as accident on usual route.. We headed towards Grenoble via Aux en province. Not been that way before, it was stunning but close to our limit re altitude. Luckily the pain had only just started as we reached the top - I can tell you that prayed to God for his mercy on that day!
I have tried to find out the name and altitude of that last village to no avail
I would be grateful for a link to finding info on altitude if you have it to hand .
Again thanks for your time

This site provide elevation for a precise address, but I guess you should have to remember the name of that village...
