All - I'm new to this section of the forum!

I am going to be offered a new role in Fano...

I'll probably accept it as it gets me closer to home, keeps me with the same company and I've always wanted to give the Italian lifestyle a go.

However, I'd be interested in any views of people who live there, near there or have visited Fano! I've been to Italy many, many times but never there!

I'm quite excited to have this as an option but I was also wondering whether anyone had advice on the cost of living, tax etc?

As I understand it; income tax in Italy is high and the cost of living is high, with cars being particularly expensive to own.

I'll be negotiating my package so I need to know if there are any specifics I should ask for/ be aware of. If tax is higher, I need to account for that, for example.

If you can help - I'd be grateful!

Thanks

I like Fano , there is a nice little harbour ,good beach and some nice shops.Plus you are very near to Pesaro, Rimini, Gabbice all heading north or Ancona ,sirolo, numuna south all of which are very nice. As for the cars insurance cost are more than in uk as is road tax especially if its over 250bhp.Petrol costs are higher also. As for tax I don't know as iam retired. Eating out on the other hand is less expensive. Good Luck.

Thanks CB - Much appreciated.

This may not happen now as my company have messed my US visa up and I am going to have to leave the country. I was hoping to stay on here until this job happened in 2-3 months but I may just have to take a job back in the UK now. I guess I could always leave that and go to the Italy job but I don't want to shaft someone by joining them and then leaving soon after.

We'll see but you make it sound lovely so I am very much 'up' for it, as long as cars/ tax don't penalise me.

Cheers,

Dom

I'm no accountant but you may find it's better to be paid off-shore, meaning your salary will be free of tax?
Unless it's changed dramatically since I worked there many years ago Italy is a fantastic place to live, given its climate, food and countryside.
Working there can be frustrating as the domani, domani attitude conflicts with the UK approach of getting the job done.
If it's a short to medium-term assignment I'd say go for it - long term could be a different proposition.
My Italian friends are always complaining about the economy and lack of services.
Also bear in mind that the economy, though one of the largest in Europe, is probably one of the sickest.

HTH.
Cheers, Pewe.

Thanks Pewe but dude to a change in visa circumstances (my company was bought by a Japanese company, making me an illegal in the US) - I have ended up working back in the UK at a competitor to the company I'd have been with in Fano...

So, this move will probably never happen now, sadly. It was still offered but it won't start until January 2015 and I think I'll be settled here by then!
