Does anyone know this area particularly well please?

We had booked four nights in Marina di Pisa on recommendation but have, on investigation decided that it may be more than a little quiet and boring on an evening! We do not want to have to get the car out every evening as we want to be able to go out and have a relaxing drink and nice meal.

We looked at Viareggio but that seems to lack a bit of character so, we have now decided that San Remo might be better. The coast seems a bit nicer and there are some nice hotels, although the good ones are very expensive.

Are there any really cool places around that area that we should look at? It needs to have plenty of little bars, cafes and restaurants to relax in on an evening.

Plus, as we will have the car, are there any spots that we really must see while we are there? We are planning to stop at Modena on our way home (anyone stayed in the Ferrari hotel?) and will visit Florence but, after that we know relatively little about the country.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
al

I used to go to Monterosso al mare and it is (was) very nice, however it was hit badly by floods/mudslides in October so you would need to check it out further before booking anything.

The rest of the 'Cinqueterre' area is also nice.

I stay in Santa Margherita Ligure several times a year when visiting family in the area.

It's not the cheapest part of the world but has a good choice of hotels, lots of bars and restaurants although can be quiet out of season. It's very central for visiting Portofino, Camogli, Genova and Cinque Terre - all accessible by train also. Boats to Rapallo and Portofino also. Other places to visit are Chiavari and Sestri Levante. Some great inland roads and the autostrada down to Genova from Milano has to be one of the best in the world.
