Gilbern GT ?1800? identity issue
Discussion
Hi there.
I read on the gilbern.co club site that the C100 series GT's would / could have originally had the Ford engine installed.
I have one with the engine from an MGB (C100257) in Australia that that has nearly had its restoration completed (we aren't doing it quickly).
I was hoping to find out some of the history behind the move by Gilbern to use the Ford engine and if a C100 car would loose some of its "original" appeal if it has a 1800 motor?
Can one tell from chasis no if the car was factory built of kit ?
I await any info with interest.
Thanks,
Clive (Feb 2010)

Hi,
I would go to the Gilbern Club Forum .. http://gilbern.co.uk/ .. register and give them the full chassis number and anything else you have to identify the car.
Brian Genti is the Club GT Historian but doesn't use "Tinterweb" .. PM me if you want me to connect you with him.
Ford engine in a GT doesn't sound right .... MG or Chevrolet V8 is all I know of but Brian will know ...
Cheers
Chris
Hi i also live in australia & own a 65 gt b100221, i believe that gilbern went to ford motors using the ford V4 motor out of the corsair, because BMC stopped supply of parts due to the gilbern was beating the MG on the track all the time.anyway your car with a chassis # starting with C would have had a ford motor originally regards Richard
Gilbern experimented with the Corsair V4 engine in the GT but it was not a success and all 6 cars were converted back to MGB 1800s. The C chassis had mountings beneath for the twin exhausts but is otherwise almost the same as the B. good to hear there are a couple of GTs enjoying the roads of Australia. My GT will be taking me on a 500 mile round trip to the Club's National Day next weekend.
