recalcitrant gauges
Discussion
Well, I've been driving it the last few days, so far, so good (touch wood).
I had an odd little experience today - when I switched it in, the rev counter (but not the actual revs) went up well into the red, and stayed there for several minutes, before gradually ebbing, until the dial started to show something that seemd like a real reading. Then, a little later, I noticed that the fuel gauge dropped to empty when I put my foot on the brake. Then ALL the gauges went funny, again, just for two or three minutes.
A couple of years ago, when I had my first one, I was looking for a bloke who had made a kit to uprate the heater; when I spoke with him, he recommended, before I did anything else, the installation of an earthing plate he manufactured. This fit to the back of the instrument panel, and provided a common earth for all the gauges. After today's little performance, I think I need one.
I have in mind that his name might have been Mackinac, or similar. Does anyone know if he is still on the go, and how to get in touch with him?

Yankee Invader : ref "I have in mind that his name might have been Mackinac, or similar. Does anyone know if he is still on the go, and how to get in touch with him?"
You are talking about MARTINEC Engineering , the Gilbern experts. Owner is Ian Topping tel: 01784 244646. Based near Heathrow Airport. There not much Ian does not know about a Gilbern. A very useful contact in helping keep your Invader on the road. Try him after 1000am & keep trying as his is a one man band & often out buying spares etc.
A Genie owner myself , in full rebuild stage. "Roger Spares" via the GOC is the other contact for free technical advice.

Although the route of your problem may lay elsewhere in the wiring, it is certainly a good idea to start by fitting an earth plate behind the dash as I detailed in my article Exposing the Mk3 Dashboard Rarebit April 2001. PS The company name you are tryning recall is Martinac Ltd, who seased trading but the owner Ian Topping continued as Martinac in Bedfont just along from Ashford hospital.
