Dutch used cars and reg plates
Discussion
Not standard practice as reg number belongs to the car rather than the owner, just like the UK, and plates are issues in a controlled system (i.e. you can only have new ones issued if you give the old ones back, or have a new vehicle identification paper issued with a duplicate code (although that law has changed recently with separate procedures for plates and papers if lost).
You can get transit plates valid for 14 days (or maybe 28?) in your own name at offices in nearly every big town/city. I think this costs €140 (I did it last year, but can't find the paperwork now), and the price includes tax and an insurance green card valid for the whole of europe.
The car has to be roadworthy (APK keuring is the equivalent of the MOT), so as long as you have this you are fully road-legal.
