employment outlook in NL
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I am taking redundancy from the Anglo-Dutch company I work for. I have for a long time wanted to transfer over to our NL site but the opportunities just aren't there any more.
I still fancy moving out there though [love the place!] and so am contemplating just moving over anyway then trying my luck on the jobs market.
The problem is that I have no idea what the market is like there at the moment. can anyone give me an overview? Is it as bad as UK?
PS - I'm an engineer.

Well, the percentage of jobless is lower here (i Holland) I think. It really depends on whether you have the skills needed..... There is the possible language barrier of course.
Try http://www.expatica.com - it's a fairly good website to start looking for jobs as an Expat in Holland
As to your skills, The Netherlands has a similar economy to the UK and tends to need people with the same skills and training. We do have a lot of private job agencies here who can find anyone a (temporary) job- I think some of them operate in the UK too now - these pay fairly badly but can get you work work quite fast.
Lots of international organizations here in The Hague where language might not be a problem. What sort of engineer?
John

Hi John,
I'm a mechanical design engineer, though my degree is in aerospace.
I unfortunately do not speak dutch so would probably be looking at an international company - oil & gas maybe? The company I work for now [big facility up at Ijmuiden ] has a policy that all meeting are in English if there are non-dutch speakers in the team.
Short term I wouldn't be concerned with what role/industry I'd be in, I just have a desire to get over there and am sure I'd find it easier to job hunt etc. once I'm settled in.
Offhand, do you know if there's a Dutch equivalent of the lieks of Matchtech, CV library etc?

Not sure about Dutch employment websites as such. I think Monsterboard.nl is quite popular though.
I don't know whether the European Space Agency might have something available, we always have jobs going here at the European Patent Office (but the language requirements for Examiners but Examiners like me are required to speak English, French and German on top of having techy degrees ).
There's plenty of hi-tech stuff around Delft, the university there has a large science park and they are essentially an engineering university so you might find something there too. Plus Delft has some nice pubs and is generally a cool place to hang out.
You could check out Philips in Eindhoven they do all sorts of things, not just shavers and light bulbs
Let me know if you want any more info
Cheers

Hi John/Albert
I lost this thread in my viewpane and forgot about it, so apologies for the delayed response.
I have been out of the loop re: aero engineering for too long and in any case I don't think I want to progress my career down that route. I am looking for work in design engineering wit ha view to moving into project management - preferably in oil & gas, shipbuilding etc. but I'd consider other interesting areas of work.
I am also thinking of applying to study for an MSc at Delft University if my job search comes to nothing.
Albert - I don't seem top be able to attach my CV to PM, can you send me one and I'll fire one over via email. Thanks for the offer!
Regards,
Phil.

yep, still here.
thanks for the info. gusto are at the top of my list already but I'd been delaying applying as I'm still not ready to move (delays finishing and selling property). I've also been accepted onto the course at delft but looks like I'll have to defer entry for the same reason. I might send a speculative app. to gusto and play it by ear.
ps - dink, apologies if I appeared ignorant of your earlier post. I've not had any response as yet but am now on linkedin myself. how might I find you on there?
