Guys

I'm looking at buying a car from the Netherlands. I has been previously registered in the UK and VAT has been paid. I'm not sure if it is currently road registered in the Netherlands.

Does anyome know if it can be simply driven back to the UK? or if not any recomentdations on transport companies

Many thanks

Dan

it is my understanding that you can export from one EU country to another with no charges incurred if you have owned the car for more than 6 mths and you are emigrating. outside of this, duty will be charged.

No duty is owed for a previously used car in the EU

If you have bought the car previously and paid VAT in one EU Country, VAT is not payable in the Country you are moving to - you cannot be charged VAT twice within the EU on the same item.

However, other local taxes may apply. In the Netherlands you will have to pay BPM - "luxury tax" - to Customs and Excise before you get your Dutch licence plate.

But there are differences in VAT percentage in EU, so you could buy a new car in a country with low % VAT, then import it to a country with high VAT, maybe that gives you a profit?

thats quite common for expats leaving NL, as the price without BPD is usually a lot cheaper than the base price in the rest of the EU.

I heard it is also possible to claim back the BPM when you export a car outside the EU.
Maybe this would be interesting when exporting cars to the US.
