Hi,

Can anyone with experience of driving the new and old Mini Cooper S on the motorway (85-90mph) tell me what the fuel consumption is for both cars?

Town MPG doesn't bother me too much.

Regards,
Christoffer

drop to 50-60mph and you can get 40mpg out of both

Thank you both.

I thought the difference was much bigger on the R53/R56 cars. And I thought the consumption was worse than that on the old model to be honest.

Good to know you can drive economically. But here's the case. I live in Denmark and I'll be using it to drive through Germany a couple of times a year - and I hate driving slow. I know there are more comfortable cars / faster cars for the money - but I prefer a Mini, to say a BMW Touring.

I've just driven from Tamworth to Shorpe and back today (210miles) which is 99% M-way in my R53.

It was for work so I was in no rush, probably averaged 65mph on the trip as up was doing 70ish all the way there. I Averaged 38mpg going North.

I reset the TC when I filled up in Scunny and set off. I Was equally relaxed coming back (I only get 27p per mile) and I got to Nottinghamshire and was on 38mpg again. So I slowed up a bit more for a challenge and eeked out 40.3mpg but was probably averaging just over 60mph. I haven't checked my average speed, just economy. I wasn't cruising with wagons as I was overtaking them. I even had a little Country A-Road blast coming back into Tamworth and kept to my 40.3mpg.

Custard test possible if you like.

I was on fresh tyres (new last week) so pressures will have been good and I was relaxed, which was key.

Oh and last 3 fuel stops have been BP, Asda and Tesco. All regular unleaded.

R56 JCW - 40mpg with cruise set to 80 and air-con on. My R56 Cooper S with start/stop etc was pretty much the same IIRC.

70-80 seems to make very little difference to mpg but it drops off a lot if you up the speed past 85 and likewise if you had more patience than me and drove at 55-60 you'd see more like 48mpg.

Managed 46mpg from my non-S Cooper over 90 miles. Cruise control on at 70mph on the GPS, probably could have done better myself as it tends to boot it when you press resume.

First time I'd tried to drive economically, previously I used to average around 37mpg at higher speeds with a heavy right foot.

Long term mainly motorway miles - 36mpg for the R53 and approaching 42mpg for the R56.
However the R53 still cheaper to run when you factor in the bills that the R56 engine regularly throws.

Our N18 R56 Cooper S will see 50 on the motorway sticking to 70ish.

6 1/2 years of ownership and it's been uber-reliable, mainly consumables. Burns zero oil.

I had an R53 S and very rarely saw more than 250 miles from a tank in 120,000 miles of ownership. My R56 fJCW (N14) was always above 350 miles per tank for 50,000 miles of ownership. In both cars normal fill ups would be 47 litres

R53 worst tank - 160 - best - 330
R56 worst tank - 280 -best - 450

If you can find a good N18 fJCW I would put my money on that, however the supercharger whine of the R53 is pure magic with the right air filter. Plus the RFL in the R53 will be quite steep now.
