Hi All,
Girlfriends Cooper S (SC) has developed a rattling sound from the engine that makes it sound like a diesel. It is intermittent, the fan also comes on for longer and more often.

not on that amount of info!Girlfriends Cooper S (SC) has developed a rattling sound from the engine that makes it sound like a diesel. It is intermittent, the fan also comes on for longer and more often.

Is the power affected, are there any warning lights on, what are the fluid levels and condition of fluids like, does it drive the same, when did it start?
etc.
could be anything from water or oil pump disintegrating casuing overheating, to big ends on their way out ( although who thats making the fan come on for longer is a mystery.
on the flip side it could be the pas pump or the air con pump rattling.
perhaps you should pop it along to a garage for a little look over, or call the AA.
or do a google search on it.
Plenty there for you to be getting on with.
Sorry - should have been more specific
Has been happening for 3 days, no loss of power, doesnt feel any different to drive. No warning lights at all. When the rattling noise goes, it sounds normal.
Mrs took it to BMW on Tuesday, they said it sounds like Clutch, which I thought was way off the mark, No slippage, no burning, doesnt slip out of gear, goes in to gear easily.
Ive been on the Mini Forums, not much on there.. someone had similar charactics, but he described the noise as different, his was a water pump.

It will be that dated Chrysler POS engine it has in it. If you push the clutch and and let it out quickly does it do it then? If so its the crap tollerances of the drive train and nothing can be done.
It didnt happen a week ago, its a new noise. Car has sounded perfect otherwise (Since ownership 18months)98C4S said:

Hi,
If no warning lights are on it sounds like the exhaust to me!
Get someone to sit in the car & rev it up then look underneath to see if your exhaust has any holes, but I'd put a £10 that it's the exhaust manifold where it matches up to the engine block, when the engine is revving put your hand over the exhaust manifold (obviously don't touch it as it will be hot) & see if you can see / feel emissions escaping, sounds like it needs a new manifold gaskit (cheap job).
Good luck, regards: Michael

Whereabouts in the engine bay is it coming from? I have read those symptons before and people had the Timing Chain tensioners replaced. If the rattle comes from the top-left of the engine (as you look at it, so the supercharger side) it might be worth thinking about that.
However, because there is so much conflicting advice out on the forums, your best bet would be to get it to a garage I think. I'm starting to take any advice on MINI forums with a pinch of salt now to be honest.
