Mini Cooper S Boot light problem

I have got a 2004 Cooper S and for some reason the light on the dash to say either the bonnet or the boot is open stays on all the time. now and then it does go out but it is very intermitten. Anyone know why it does it? I have checked the boot and bonnet are both shut properly but it just stays on.

There are a few issues with this but the easiest ones to check are;

1, open the bonnet and on the drivers side bonnet catch is a microswitch...they sometimes pop out or the tang breaks off.

2, look through the rear screen to the instrument cluster with the light on and push on the bottom of the tailgate an see if the light flickers on and off (with the bonnet shut)
