What discount should I be looking at for a new Cooper S from a dealership? When my sister bought her 03 plate cooper S new, all she got was a free umbrella. As they said they didn't do discounts. Hopefully things have changed.

Also what will she expect in part exchange for her 03 plate cooper S in silver with black leather with 50k mileage in below average condition?

For a trade in valueation try networkq.co.uk they have a "value my car" section which shoudl give an idea on trade in value.

As to discounts...mini generally ban their dealers from offering any, I negotiated a dicsount of the dealer fit options I wanted (JCW aero kit, ipod connector) and got TLC for free... but that was a year ago and things might have changed.

I would however recommend not buying new, loose loads...'m selling my car at 16 month old and loosing a ton of ££ including cost of all the extras put on the car. So I would recommened selling privately and then buying privately...save a fortune that way.

I recently bought an excellent condition black Cooper S, 32k miles on a '54 plate for a smidge under £12k, from the MINI dealer. More miles plus older will likely push her below £10k.

On the network Q it gives a below average condition (which it is) price of £5750. I don't think she has done too bad seeing as she paid £16500, five and a half years ago.

I think the dealer line is still very much 'new discount' but considering the conditions if you shop around there may be some room for movement.

Mini dealers historically do not discount their cars however 2.5% - 3.5% should be achievable. It is also worth looking at the nearly new cars as quite a lot of these are BMW group cars which have been driven by employees and their families and often have additional options.

In this day and age all dealers will have to accept that they need to offer good discounts to attract buyers. A friend of mine was looking for a new 911 recently. Went to a few dealers in the London area and received the standard response. He then rang round a 2 - 3 dealers outside of the M25 and they were much more accomodating.

If you can now get a reasonable discount on a new 911, you should be be able to get 7% + on a Mini.

What?? You're comparing chalk and cheese. Opposite ends of the spectrum.

I've just run a quick check on DtD - they can save a whopping £25.00 (yes, twenty five quid) off list for an MCS with Chilli.

There are deals to be done on ex-demonstrators (I know: mine arrives next week - although MC, not MCS), but you'll be doing seriously well to find a dealer to discount substantially on a new one for a while yet. But maybe if the economic slow down continues... who knows??

A friend took delivery of a new 3 Series Coupe from her local dealer on 1st Sept. She ordered it 3.5 months before that, got 7% discount + agreed valuation on her trade in.

I bet you will get the same discount on a Mini. You may have to shop around, but there will be a dealer who wants your business.

You wont, you will never get more than 4%.

And no we don't need to offer discounts like BMW we are selling cars.

And your average place will do you a deal but it will be more aimed at adding products in foc instead of discounting the car.

After a couple of calls this morning, I have already been offered 5% plus a few extra goodies thrown in. With a little more effort, I can achieve much more.

Well they are obviously in a poor area then that's been hit hard, as we have not offered a discount over 4% on any car this year.

I've got 5.5% off list (£20500) with a full tank of petrol, mini umbrella, bunch of flowers, and mini cleaning kit(which will never get used).

Do you think there is anything more in it?

I would go with that. The dealer must really need the registration.
