Clio 182 Cup, Left For Dust
Discussion
Comming home from work earlier on tonight, Started the mini up, window down enjoying the drive. Whent to over take the car in front, and in front of that was a 182 cup overtaking the car in front of him. Sport button is pressed and the Mini is pulling like a train, soon im alongside the clio, and a quick look tells me hes gutted as im going past him (at 60 of course!) That was the last I sore of him,
Bloody love the Min, I really does keep suprising!

To be honest I doubt he was trying that hard. I would think the mini would be quicker but we are talking fractions here so if he had floored it I guess it would have been pretty equal.
182's are good cars and don't suffer from the torque issues of the 197.
I was thinking the same thing. I expect he was gutted that his nerve ran out, rather than his speed.182's are good cars and don't suffer from the torque issues of the 197.

You'd be surprised! I was at Bedford last week and there was a Clio 182 Trophy going round most of the day. I decided to see how the Mini faired against it, so I coincided a few hot laps with him. I was easily pulling away from him after the corners & on long straights, and it was only when we reached really tight corners did he gain again (I guess that's the weight thing). I also managed to shock quite a few other 'Hot Hatch' owners e.g a Focus ST and a couple of Golf GTi's. They came and chatted to me in the pits asking what I was running. Now, I'm by NO means any sort of track expert or regular, so I defo put a lot of it down to the R56's capability.

I am a ex CTR owner so used to love getting away from Clio's but it wasn't easy and I had some fun battles with them.
I agree, I have an R56 S (for another 10 days!) and I have had an old 172 cup never mind a 182. The mini is quicker, no doubt - but not that much quicker. My guess is the clio driver got caught a bit off guard or in the wrong gear or just didnt really have a go.
Not having a go at the mini (apart from the build quality which is utter s
te and the ride on the utterly terrible 17s and run flats
) its a decent car; but its just a quickish hatch. The clio is also a quickish hatch and in quickish hatch terms there is not that much in it!!

If letstorquebhp.coms figures are anything to go by the mini is 2 secs slower to 100mph and has about 10 or more bhp/tonne down on the renault. I cant see a CTR or a mini sailing away from a 182 after my experiences on the road with them there is very little between them. The only time a mini would nail the clio is low down the revs or in other situations where the mini's easy accessible torque comes into play.

Has nobody thought of driver ability? Maybe the Clio driver isn't a confident driver etc.
The only way to settle this arguement would be to get one driver, one circuit and get him to do a hot lap in each car and see which is quickest?
Different conditions favour both cars though, plenty straights with long bends a clio is going to be hard to pass, short straights and hairpins will suit a mini cooper s. At the end of the day the mini is the nicer place to be.The only way to settle this arguement would be to get one driver, one circuit and get him to do a hot lap in each car and see which is quickest?
