what mpg does it do?
We've had an ave of 51.7 according to the computer which is accurate when compared to manual calcs. However, reliable it ain't. At the time of writing the BMW dealer have now had it a week to fix an engine management problem. This is their second attempt at fixing it.
I have advised the Sales Manager if they don't get it right this time, the Sale of Goods Act will be discussed.
Overall, very dissappointed with it.

What are the first diesel mini engines like for relibility and fuel consumption?
I presume that you are asking about the 'ONE D'. The engine in this car is a Toyota unit, and is pretty much bombproof if maintained properly. It came in two forms throughout the ONE D's life. The first was 75bhp, this was from launch until the cars were face lifted. After the face lift the engine was upped to 88bhp (with more torque too) it was done primarily to meet new emissions regs. I think it included new injectors, an ECU remap and a few other bits and bobs.
I own a 2006 model which has the later engine. So far in over a years ownership all I have had done is a service. Its running very well. My brother has a ONE D too, his is the 75bhp version and his too has required nothing but a service.
Performance is not as good as the Cooper D, but once you get the car up into its power band it can be quite spiritedly, more so that a petrol ONE in my opinion. I have driven both, and preferred the get up and go of the diesel. I much preferred the engine note of the petrol though.
Mpg wise, I wouldn't say it is amazing. I drive my car quite heavily and I get around 43mpg combined. If I take it easy, and do a fair bit of motorway driving then high 40's low 50's are possible. Cant say I have ever seen higher than 53mpg combined on my trip computer. I will depend a lot of your driving style TBH.
Any more questions about the ONE D, then fire away. If you were talking about the Cooper D, then ignore the above!

I have a 2004 diesel, thankfully remapped at 5,000 miles by West Tuning - before that it was v disappointing, and became a competant car, still no road rocket - more like a plain cooper really. Mileage wise, I can get over 50 mpg if I struggle, but in normal fast motorway & town, I average about 45-47 mpg, which isn't bad for my press-on style. I'd recommend the conversion, on rolling road I got 115 bhp & Cooper S level of torque, optimised at midrange. Adrian Flux insurance scheme only added £ 20 to the premium, and I change oil every 10,000m.
Again, this is in the context of a ONE D and not the new Cooper D.
There are no major reliability problems with the diesel MINI. If you make sure that it has a full service history, and you maintain its servicing then you should have no problems. Reports of problems with the ONE D are very few and far between on MINI2. (dedicated MINI forum site)
MPG wise, my car is one of the last ONE D's, and thus has 88bhp (the originals had 75bhp). It sits at 40mpg no matter how hard I drive it. This figure represents no motorway driving. Its all stop-start town driving or country lane blasts.
However... On a recent 580 mile round trip to London the car returned an average figure of 54mpg, this was at about 75-80 mph for most of the journey, and running 17" alloys. It all depends on how you drive it

I had a couple of Mini One D's as a driving tuition cars. The 1.4 Toyota Diesel is brilliant, there were two generations used in the Mini. The early one was a little more sluggish. The later one was much better, the turbo seemed to cut in sooner.
The MPG was impressive, one tank would last me a whole week. Whereas the petrol versions I had to fill at least twice a week.
I have no experience of the Cooper D with the Peugeot engine so can not comment on that.
It is a shame they don't have a new version of the Mini One D, maybe in the future?

I just returned a Clubman Cooper D 08 Leeds to Wakefield tomight and managed 67.5mpg. Ours was in for plates changing, and a slight intermittent mis fire - turned out to be a coil pack! Got the Clubman as a courtesy car. P.s that was at about half four so traffic was building on the M1, so was a steady run.
