Just picked up my Mini (02 Cooper S)and seem to be having a bit of bother with the built in sat-nav. The screen just goes blank for no reason, then starts to work again after what can be a few minutes or a few hours. It also looses the map and we can be driving along with no roads showing.

I'll be having a closer look at it later in the week, i'll try cleaning the disc and stuff, but wondered if anyone else had sat-nav probs and what was done to fix it?

The sat nav in my 52 reg mini can be a bit slow at times and often sends me the wrong way but I haven't had the type of problems that you describe. Did you buy the car from a dealer? If so take it back and ask them to have a look. If not call the local dealer and just ask questions on it, quite often they can suggest what you can do to fix it.

Hi, just had a chat with a service guy at Williams BMW and he suggests disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes as it could be a reset fault. Make sure you have all teh codes to reset everything first.

If it continues to be a problem you may be looking at a new screen.

I haven't had much time to take a close look at it, been very busy lately, but I'm told that the sat-nav unit is under the passenger seat, where as in mine, the lad told me the disc goes in slot 1 of the multi-changer in the boot.

The computer states that there is no CD inserted when you first start the car, but after 30ish secs, the navigation stuff comes on. It frequently looses the map information and it's at these times, the screen just goes blank and will come back on with the mini symbol, as if the computer has reset itself.

I'm hoping that there is a nav unit under the seat and all it needs is the disc cleaning/replacing. Fingers crossed, or else it's off to the dealers to have open wallet surgery.

Had a good look around yesterday and it looks like open wallet surgey is required.

Bought the car private so only myself to blame for not checking it for long enough, still worth an email to see if there's any good will - if you don't ask, you'll never get.

Sorry to hear that. Have a word with the blokes at your local BMW dealership, one of them might have an idea on how to sort it for not too much cash. A little dickie bird tells me there is a competition on at some dealerships at the moment for the best customer service before Christmas, you might strike lucky and get some poor guy who is not currently in the running and is feeling generous. Good Luck.

Seen a few sat nav failures-make sure when the unit is taken out there isnt any water ingress to the area.

It's doing my head in now. Does anyone know where the sat-nav unit is located so I can check the connections? Also, is the map disc supposed to be in slot 1 or slot 6 of the disc changer. I was told it was slot 1, but it seems to work in slot 6 a lot better. The manual isn't much help, it thinks the disc should go under the front seat, but there isn't anything there rolleyes

I hope it's not a dash out job.

the disc is located under the drivers seat, lift the seat forward (as if your letting someone in) then look under the seat, its a small black box with a flap on it which opens to the right, under there is a button to eject the disc. I have not had probs with my sat nav so im unable to answer your question but i hope you get it sorted and i hope you understand my instructions

Understood thumbup

I've found the unit under the drivers seat - thank goodness you said it's behind the flap, I've been looking for a chunky box type affair, never noticed the flap before.

After ejecting the disc, turns out it's a copy in the unit, but now that it's been ejected, I can't get either the original disc or the copy disc to go back in.

It's in the hands of the BMW dealer now, so I hope it's just a new disc thats required, but I get the feeling that I'm about to get my wallet fleeced.

*update*

Hats off to the BMW dealer, didn't charge me a penny for having a look at whats wrong. Unfortunately, he says it needs a new Sat-Nav unit, to the tune of £816, ouch!

Looking around eBay, theres some for just less than £500, but not sure if they are compatible and lets face it, the BMW sat-nav isn't a patch on a TomTom, so might just leave it as it is.

i have seen some on ebay from time to time, one sold for £100.

Its a bit poor that only after a few years it needs a new unit, especially as they cost £1500 new

Buy a tom tom and sod the mini sat nav. I am not all that impressed with the sat nav to be honest and will quite often resort to a road map instead.

Thumbs up to the dealer though for not charging you for looking at it.
