fuel consumption
Discussion
Thinking of buying a mini cooper / cooper s, But I know i'm going to be doing a few miles with work this year anything from 12-16k, so fuel consumption is important.
test drove a cooper S and the sales guy reckoned 35mpg easily possible if I take it easy, but I would like an unbiased opinion, so what do you get? be it cooper or cooper s? and hints on what to look out for etc. The car will be mainly on A and m roads,
want to spend about 10-12k so looking at a 2-3yr old model. Finding the cooper s are better value for money, more options etc.
Cheers
i'd say that was a bit unrealistic. we do a combination of fiancee town and motorway driving and me motorway and 'swift' driving and get more like 30-31 mpg (170 facelift MCS). apparently if you upgrade t with the BBR stage 1 'chip' you not only get 185(ish) bhp but also improved economy.
from what i can gather the cooper is barely any better really and it's a fair bit slower.

It depends on how you drive, i get 28mpg - 32, 32 being motorway miles and 28 being taking it easy on a A/B road
you can get it to very low 20's
my advise would be if you were only to take it easy and worry about the fuel why not just get the cooper?
The reason the cooper S represents such good value and is cheaper to buy second hand is purely a insurance and fuel consumption issue, think carefully if you need the power as the cooper will give you 90% of the cooper s just without the constant runs to the petrol station

I have a Cooper S and the fuel economy can be a bit brutal to be honest.
Driving from Brighton to Crewe will eat up about 2/3 to 3/4 of a tank which is about £38 to fill up from empty. Call it a 40 ltr tank for easy maths (it may even be 40ltrs, I am not sure) and you can work it out.
Heavy foot B road driving is amazing, but a back of a fag packet calculation shows between 23 and 25mpg. Not exactly great from a 1.6 is it but he tank will go in about 280 miles. Amazingly good fun though. On a motorway, the tank could be sipped to get about 350 miles (maybe, I have never got more than 330 out of mine but have also never run it to the extreme edges of the fuel gauge.
Put it like this, I drove from Nantwich to Coventry and back on the weekend on mostly the motorways at about 85 and probably did about £24's worth of fuel.
My advice, try the cooper and love it but do not try the cooper s if you are worried about fuel economy. You will love to extra power too much to care about fuel economy at the time of purchase but after a few months you'll feel the sting and start thinking about the cost.
Basically, the salesman either drives like a pansy or what he says was muffled as he was talking out of his arse whilst sitting down.
Hope this helps!

Well if we go by the computer I average 34mpg and I cane my MCS. That said, I cane it locally, the figure is most likely skewed by motorwat drives.
I find it economical though. And it needs to be taken in the overall running costs, which with TLC are barely anything at all. No doubt, Minis are painless cars to run.

You'd need to drive liek a nun to get 35mpg out of an 'S'. I averaged 33 in a standard Cooper loan car I had. The 'S' will do well to average in excess of 30mpg.
The salesman is talking boll*x.
I have had my S now since December and driven 18,000km , ok admittedly i do not do a lot of city driving and i have averaged 35,4 mpg according to the computer.
And i assure you i do not drive like Num or an Iman or a Rabbi

29 MPG so far for me and most of that is long distance cruising (i've only had it a month and have driven to Padstow and back in that time)
I get about 34mpg on average... in a mini one. I definitely dont hang around. If the cooper sounds tempting to you and you don't mind getting your engine chipped, you can get an extra 30 bhp out of the one (therefore more powerful than cooper) though either BBR or Superchips. Mine isn't chipped, not sure how reliable they are, sound good though. Great car in general tho.. get a One
