Just bought a Cooper 's' - modifying thoughts
Discussion
Better half has recently purchased a little cracker...After trying to get her to buy a grey one with JCW kit on, she decided as its her car and I wasnt willing to pay the extra premium she would decide what car SHE would buy and drive...boooo!
Dark blue cooper s - very very nice car, in fact luv it to bits.
I am very interested in the merits of the BBR chip to 185hp, and the fuel figures banded around are very impressive! Anyone got any experience of this. I am currently getting around 240miles a tank which i think equates to 28mpg ish.
Saying that though for 1300 quid I could take her to the next level - do you think she would notice?????
GTT also give out some good spec for seemingly cracking value
then of course JCW spec - cant find prices for this, peace of mind with warranty/TLC no doubt attracts the premium price...
thoughts - I see one person has the 185 BBR setup - any fuel changes?

I'm getting a GGR (Graham Goode Racing) 210bhp upgrade soonish - I bought it via the MINI2 Charity Ball auction a couple of weeks ago for a bargain price of £475 (£1400 usually). GGR wouldn't have been my first choice for engine upgrades although they do have a heck of a lot of experience in engine tuning. All my other stuff on the S is by M7 or GTT (I just love GTT).
We'll see how it goes.

We're running the 185 chip on ours, decent value and yes it does improve economy - particularly constant speed stuff. Not much, maybe 5% but its worth having. Engine revs keener, low speed flat spots gone, more mid range - all good. Shame you have to drive to Banbury for fitting though....

hi there i got my cooper S done by GTT.(250 bhp ).then remapped by MTH.i get 240 miles to the tank on motorway driving (85 mph-90mph ).
i got a GTT manifold for sale £380 .retail new for £480.this adds 8-12 bhp on the S .
car is now for sale on PISTONHEADS at 235 bhp.
Whats your 0-60 time now ?
I have an S with the BBR stage 1 220 bhp conversion and suspension kit, its an amazing little car; girlfriend mainly drives it (to work/shops) and loves it, you'd never know it was modified, until you take it for a blast that is and then it really flies!
Call BBR for some costs, reputable company and really know about tuning these Mini's...

It's my belief that the JCW kits are more thoroughly developed and validated. People may have had no problems with other kist after 10,000 miles - but if BMW still warranty JCW cars for three years, you can bet they've really caned them on the test benches and what-not to ensure they are good for the same abuse and mileage as a BMW motor like the M3.
(so they'll go bang at 85,000 then..)
Would be interesting to hear what modified engine failures people have had - come on, who's thrown a rod?

Got my Cooper S done at Dastek. (Milltech exhaust, induction kit, "speical" black box, etc.) which makes excellent BHP improvement. However, Dastek have a superb rolling road (I think the most powerfull FWD type in UK???) so I could see the improvements. However, they have told me of many instances where people have spent a fortune for specific upgrade which when tested on the rolling road, falls far short of what they thought they were paying for.
My question is: With the other places talked about above, do you get a print out showing the graphs, etc. Or do you just hope &/or feel by seat of your pants................?

Dastek a superb rolling road? i would disagree having seen one and the competition first hand..
I may be a bit biased but BBR tend to have very good write ups when it comes to tuning the Cooper S. I can assure you when they say they have 220bhp out of a Mini engine this is true flywheel power not a guess from the wheels. All BBR Mini remaps have been done on an engine dyno as they believe you cant get true reliable figures from a chassis dyno.
It comes down to the reputation of the tuner, you either trust them or you dont. All tuners have told a few fibs on times when it comes to quoting power outputs.
Mike. Noted. I had only ever been to one rolling road so can only go by my own impressions & what they told me whilst I was there. That said, because I've gone from one of the earlier lower 168BHP Coopers S's , to current 208BHP, the difference was like they'd put a rocket in there.
At the time, I went to about 6 sites saying what car I had, how much I had to spend, & what I wanted to achieve. Having sent contact emails to all of them, Dastek was the only company that was interested in my original budget spend of £2,000 to £5,000......
