I am about to buy a R53 manual cooper s in Bangkok, then drive it down to phuket where I live. The car will be a fun car, occasional trips around the country, but not many long jaunts. It is a little bit ASBOed, Remus exhaust which will have to have some type of baffle in it, Tein suspension, brembo brakes, a pullet of unknown parentage, uprated ignition box and leads, cone air filter.

I am a little nervous about the cooling issues R53s are known for. Could someone suggest any mods that might help? I was thinking of a supercharger service, new water pump, new expansion tank with pressure cap, new silicone hoses all round. Is it worth getting an uprated intercooler? If so which is best for lowering intake charge temp? Is a new radiator / uprated radiator a good idea? How about the fan? I ve seen twin fan conversions, but cant seem to find them for sale.

Any other advice would be gratefully received. I am back in the UK for a few weeks soon, so would want to get the bits before I fly back.

Thanks

The test driver

General maintenance is the best recommendation, Ensure both fan speeds are working as the fan speed resistor is a common failure. If you going to replace the rad get a Nissen radiator and not one of those god awful Fletchers as they leak within 6 months consistently.
Check the colour of the coolant and change it as a matter of course for the correct type, heater matrix's and oil coolers get blocked up with crap regularly.
You could also run a cooler thermostat which can be got form the likes of Oranjje and co.
