Hi everyone

Just had a big plume of smoke on startup from the engine bay and a noise almost like a power steering pump whining which calmed down after 3/4 seconds but there’s still a continuous whine now.

Car drives fine and hasn’t lost power but there’s a strong burning smell from the bay.
My guess is crank pulley but any suggestions?

And if so, what’s a rough price I can expect to pay to replace and anyone local to Slough who can do it?

For context, 2005 FL R53 Cooper S. 137k miles. Two days prior to this I got the car back from a local mechanic who replaced my heater matrix after that leaked, no idea if there is any connection there.

Thanks!

If the crank pulley were the problem - it wouldn't run as normal.

Additionally, it wouldn't create a cloud of smoke from the engine bay.
