Hi,

My mini has been recalled because it requires an EFR Replacement. My engine light is on and and I have twice have the drivetrain light on but it turned itself off so I wasn’t concerned. Mini have told me not to drive the car because it could make it worse (and there is the obvious safety concern as written on the letter). Despite mini themselves telling me not to drive the vehicle they won’t provide me with a courtesy car.

They are happy to recover the vehicle to their garage for replacement but replacement isn’t until the 7th August so I’d be without a vehicle for the best part of 3 weeks. I have no access to any other vehicle and I have explained this to them but they’re not willing to budge.

Has anyone had a similar experience / obtained a courtesy car from them?

TIA

Not with Mini, but with BMW for the EGR recall, and now for the airbag recall.

Both times they've said not to book it in until they contact me to do so, as they only have limited stock of the replacement items.

Both were/are considered 'safety' items, yet they expect you to decide whether to 'risk it' and drive it, or park it up for 8-12 weeks whilst they build stock.

Luckily I'm mostly working from home, but hire car prices are ridiculous since Covid, so I'm unlikely to go down that route if I need a car for a week away, plus courtesy cars are no longer 'free', so you end up paying the same as a hire car...with much lower mileage allowance.

It really is difficult isn’t it, we are a one car household at the minute, I’ve got a daughter and my partner is in the police and relies on the car to get to work. Don’t know how they expect people to manage when it’s their fault that’s causing the issues and moreover, the manufacturing fault that has led them to tell me not to drive the vehicle! They tried to fob me off saying that it’s out of warranty so they won’t provide one, in my opinion that shouldn’t matter. It’s their fault that has put me in this position 😖

I guess given the number of cars affected - iirc it’s over 100,000 - it’s difficult to see how they could give everyone a courtesy car.
Unless you have a great buying relationship with your dealer it’s equally difficult to see how they would help.
As you say it’s a tough call whether to drive it or not although the numbers involved that developed an issue appear very very small.

This is interesting. Ours is at the Mini garage awaiting some part or other with a drivetrain error. What year s are affected?
