help please !

107k miles, serviced religiously, no previous issues ( other than a few corroded lights )

drove to work ok 8am fine

started at 5pm and ran at a fast idle, not responsive to throttle, died after 15 seconds

repeated this twice

fourth time onwards, it makes all the right noises, but just won't quite fire up : it's SO close to doing so

breakdown recovery chap flummoxed. suggested flooding or dodgy fuel

any suggestions gratefully received

thank you !

my thanks
would it run at all if it were the fuel pump ?
or is it possible for the pump to run weakly rather than just fail ?

Intermittent cold start is the normal first signs, direct injection requires pretty high pressure, normally on idle my reading is in the range of 700psi, HPFP fail pretty regularly unfortunately.
