Always had fast fords, but after having most of them I now have a 1999 mitsubishi evo 6 as my toy car.

Problem is I’m just not enjoying it!

My wife used to have a Cooper sd with full jcw bodykit and interior which we loved, but traded it up as it was too small for her.

Loved driving it so now thinking of getting another mini - love the look of the gp2 and watched lots of videos on them! Could probably survive with just 2 seats as we have other cars for family duties.
However are they worth the extra money and 2 seat compromise over a decent jcw?

Will they be a collectors item one day?

Current R56 JCW owner, had my eye on the GPs since summer.

Had a couple of test drives in them, loved the look, drove nicely.... but I'm not sure it was a major step on from my regular JCW.

Very small power/torque bump (compared to the 70hp bump the GP3 gets), noticeably harsher ride (which I understand but it never settled), and a good bit more tyre roar. Having compared a GP3 to an F56 JCW which felt like an M vs M performance type jump, the GP2 wasn't persoanlly a great step on - a slightly breathed on R56 if anything. I could probably just about daily the GP2.

Then, the pricing...... I reckon mine is worth £8.5k?

A good one with lower than average mileage is £22k+. Yes there are cheaper examples, but as seen with the GP3, a higher than average mileage one take a value hit, or struggle to sell (which is more likely given most traders are ignoring the prevailing winds). Most of the ones on autotrader have been sat there months. The 15,750 one on AT has had 2 price drops in as many months and still not sold.

Is the GP2 a special car? For sure - is it worth more than double, nearly triple a good standard JCW? Hmmmm. Abve all, it's an 11 year old harder edged Mini. Lots of arguably better cars at that price.

As a marker of how far out the pricing is, I know previous owner of the 27.5k one thats at Sytner. They gave him 16.5k. Expect to see it still up for sale at Christmas. The age old 'it's rare and low mileage so must command a premium over the rest of market doesn't apply anymore IMO. Really, it's the top of all the ones on sale, and it's a 22k car if I'm being generous. Sytner calling it an investment opportunity is a stretch.

Another one went to auction back in November - 29k miles.... It got 18250k...... Despite the estimate saying up to 25k. After sellers fees, seller wuld've taken maybe 16.5k on an low mileage one? Crazy.

I'll still keep an eye on the ones up for sale, but can't justify the extra ££££ over a regular JCW.
Sorry to rain on your dreams!

A lot of sense above. I was looking at either a GP2 or an F56 JCW to move up to from a stage 1 tuned R56 Cooper S (which I'd actually bought over an R56 JCW due to not being able to find a good one as they were all ratty, but that is another story).
I loved my R56, and it looked great with the optional JCW aerokit, and with the remap it gave the same power as a stock JCW or GP2.

I think the GP2 is a special car and already collectable but the price to change was high then, and silly now. And I would have certainly ended up tuning it on top to get 270bhp, which would arguably devalue it.
So MINI wise I narrowed it down to either taking my Cooper S to stage 2 and changing the suspension (and I wanted to make the ride quality better, not worse - so if the GP2 is even harsher as Sagaris99 says then that isn't ideal) or just getting an F56 JCW and remapping that to 280-300bhp, which is a better bang for your buck and almost GP3 power.

Even a nice example of F56 JCW can be had for well under £20k. They ride so much better than the R56, better build quality, more reliable, loads of power from just a remap, decent brakes as standard. I know it is a different proposition and less hardcore and rare - also less manic/hyperactive in nature -, but you have to weigh up the pros and cons of each.

For me it depends on what you look for in a car and what priorities you list them in. Both GP2’s and JCW’s are special but for me the GP has more fairy dust sprinkled on it to take it to the next level.

I have not driven a JCW so cannot comment on that; however we bought a GP2 last year and absolutely love it. Such a great car that involves you in the driving experience. Yes the ride is harsh and the cabin is noisy but we don’t mind that as the smiles per mile soon evaporate those issues. I traded in a Impreza WR1 for it, which I do not miss after owning the GP for a year.

We are very happy with the GP2 and glad we pushed ourselves more financially to buy it over a JCW. I’m a big fan of limited/special editions in cars but often the cost premium is debatable over other models as to if you get a better car. Is it a better car? It’s all about personal choice and opinion really. I have found there are often negative comments about limited run cars possibly borne out of jealously or envy who knows either way I find it quite sad.

I am very lucky to also own a Evo 6 TME. Would I of traded that for a GP2? Definitely not. I guess drive both a GP and JCW and see which feels the right match to you. Then you have the unenviable decision of whether to trade the Evo in for it; a tricky choice biggrin

While i’ve never owned an evo… i did own an R32 GT-R for 12 years and now have a F56 JCW challenge.

In terms of driving pleasure, i hate to say it, but i find the mini alot more fun and engaging. Something i discovered i’d forgotten, when i owned a 595 comp as a daily for a few years before the mini, was the fun you can have chucking about a small car.
Even my OH noticed my change in demeanour when i would swap between the cars, to the point i left the R32 at the garage and took the 595 on my way down to Silverstone Classic instead.

You can get parts easily when you need, which at least I found was becoming more of an issue for a the R32, and over the years i went from constant road tripping to the odd paranoid jaunt to get the MOT done.

Sure it lacks power, and you’ll miss the feeling you get when you come on boost hard on the throttle, but it more than makes up for it by being chuckable through tight twisty roads at legal speeds with the turbo chattering away and popping and banging like a rally car (pro exhaust)

And when you want to get to a to b without drama, it just seems to be more relaxing, just crusies along like the boring 2-series that the f56 is lol.

As an end to this, hopefully!

Took a cooper countryman and jcw hatch out today on a test drive, absolutely loved the jcw so have provisionally ordered one for delivery in September!

Rebel green, jcw, white roof, upgraded alloys and added the premium plus pack to get the sunroof and heads up display.

It’s my 40th this year and my wife’s next year so we decided to treat ourselves.

I just need to sell the evo now!

It’s the 8 speed auto.

A young lad put a deposit on the evo this morning after a lengthy check over, he is coming back Saturday to pay the rest and take it home frown

Quick graphic from mini of how ours should look
