68 plate Mini, just about to hit 30k miles and the oil service warning light has come on today on the way to work. Asked the missus to sort it with the local dealer, and she has text me at work to say they want nearly £500 as it's classed as a 'major service'. I haven't a clue about service intervals on these, we havent had it that long. I was expecting a simple oil change, surely the car would also display a warning that a major service interval was due? Just checking I'm not being taken to the cleaners...

Service intervals on the F56 are 2 Years/18000 Miles, whichever comes first.

Minor Service - Oil & Filter
Major Service - Oil & Filter, Air Filter & Spark Plugs

Given the age of the car it may be needing a brake fluid change as well.

Might be worth trying to find an independent specialist who should be cheaper than a MINI dealer.

Cheers, so 4 years is a major. The nearest Mini specialist is a fair trek away so will probably have to suck up the dealer's price.

If have basic spanner knowledge do the plugs and air filter yourself then pay for the oil service plus brake fluid should be about £280 ( that’s what I did)
Air filter if use OEM from bmw/mini about £40 and plugs from euro car parts about £60 for the better NGK (most dealers use champion).

£500 should include brake fluid change.
The air filter is a really simple job 3/4 screws and one dealers don’t always change but charge as it’s every 2 years!!!!! Also they never clean out the air box properly!

Depends if yours is a special edition, John Cooper Works etc, etc, but if more or less a standard Mini / Clubman type, at 4 yr old / 30000 miles I'd probably be looking at an independent. Even places like Halfords / Kwik Fit. I know folks sometimes bad mouth these places, but I've never had probs if I've used Kwik Fit in the past.

There's nothing special about servicing a JCW over a standard car. Kwik Fit and the likes are only as good as the mechanics, some are good, some are bad. It's best to find a mechanic you can trust.

if the car is still in warranty id be taking it to the dealer.. if anything happens its so much hassle getting them to sort it when its not been in their workshop. i should know i have had enough of them.
The likes of SWSS in cardiff , Lohen , evolve , mjr mini matt , Sussex road and race , TWG automotive , are all mini / bmw specialists and will see you right.

the other posters will be right about the brake fluid as its every 2 years. and normally not covered under the TLC pack or whatever its called now
