2017 JCW Auto ‘box Problems - Lumpy
Discussion
For the last couple of weeks, during a long drive on a and B roads, a couple of hundred miles that is, the 8 speed auto gearbox becomes very keen to kick-down.
It goes back to normal the next day and is then ok pottering around during the week.
The worst problem is that no matter how lightly I accelerate, when it gets to about 15 mph it kicks down charges off then sorts itself out with a heavy clunk … very embarrassing it looks like I’m trying to race everybody and doing it badly
Any idea what may be the problem or how I can resolve it …
Cheers
edited to remove reference to ZF ... I had just assumed it was ZF

I had a Clubman 2018 SD with this box and had the gearbox replaced under warranty.
Initially it was a bit lumpy and then I had transmission error come up and car going into limp mode.
The tech reckoned it was probably the actuators and that with age/mileage the trans oil gets dirty and clogs them. This despite Mini insisting on them being sealed for life.
My car was at 40k miles and 2 1/2 years old so the gearbox was replaced under warranty.
The replacement was noticeably smoother but I sold the car shortly after.

Cheers Pete.
I had mine booked in at mini specialist for some diagnostics but they said that it wasn't an oil leak then all they could do was reset it to default settings and hope it didn't learn any bad habits. Other than that they said I needed a gearbxo spcialist.
I cancelled the appointment though as it settled down. Not sure if it is still a bit lumpy or whether I'm imagining it ... its defo not hunting for 3rd gear any more though.
I'd like to swap it, probably for a z4m, but struggling to get agreement! I'll be annoyed if the problem returns and ends up being expensive!

A bit more detail on what happened with mine.
Box worked fine up to about 40k miles. Then noticed it was a bit sudden , lumpy on upshifts occasionally.
When I did experience the car going into limp mode it would hold onto a gear and not upshift.
I’d start a journey and everything was ok but once the car was properly warmed up after about half an hour it would start to misbehave.
The car went into Mini and on the first visit they plugged it into diagnostics and couldn’t find any fault.
Got the car back went for a drive and after half an hour the problem returned. Drove the car back my Mini dealership and left the car running, whilst I got the technician to come and have a look whilst it was still in limp mode. It was only then that they recognised the fault.
I was told that rather than chase the fault it was easier to put in a new gearbox which Mini agreed to and it was replaced without quibble.
I dread to think what that would have cost me if the car wasn’t still under warranty.

Some interesting info here from others who have had warranty claims / new gearboxes : https://www.minif56.com/threads/defect-oct-18-jcw-...
