Countryman R60 gear selection problem

The manual gear stick on my Countryman has lost the spring centralisation that would normally leave the lever sitting in neutral between 2nd and 4th and the gear selection appears to have shifted to the right , so much so that I can’t get 5th or 6th gears.

Any ideas before I try and get it booked into the local garage , which has a backlog of a couple of weeks.
