Hello wavey

My wife is currently in the market for a newish Mini Cooper and we have seen (and test driven) a lovely 2018 Cooper Sport.

I know the car has stop/start which is not something I am used to but on the test drive I noticed when pulling out of the dealer the car sounded like it was struggling. It is only a 2018 with ~30k miles so I doubt it is anything serious but the sound/feel was akin to pulling off in a manual that was on the verge of stalling. Once you're driving it was fine.

The salesman told me it was just down to the stop/start and the car deciding whether it needed to switch off or not. I didn't think much of it but given my current car (Scirocco) doesn't have this feature I wanted to get your thoughts. Is this "normal" or something to be concerned about. I think for 90% of driving the stop/start will be turned off.

Cheers in advance!

Sounds like a blag to me. If your pulling off in the car it wouldn’t be wanting to stop or even thinking about stopping. If the car is in gear it wouldn’t be stopping. They only stop when actually stopped and put in neutral.

Is it an auto or manual?

Sometimes it will be hesitant as it does think you've come to a stop but pull away. If it was from cold though stop start won't activate until the car warms up.

We have a 17 JCW auto. I’ve never noticed what you describe. I’m suspicious of the salesman’s explanation.

Car was warm, and I didn't notice it during the rest of the test drive so presume it had warmed up.

Thanks for the advice all - car was otherwise perfect so will swing another test drive.

Ask to test from cold. Believe the stop start only works when warm.

Turn it off if you buy it. I can’t imagine it does anything for the longevity of parts. It’s not like it has a 48v mild hybrid system.

The B48 MCS is a robust car. No issues with ours in two years. I have to press a view buttons before I drive off. Stop start off, sport mode, traction part off.

As everyone above has said, that explanation is bullsh!t.

That doesn't mean there is an issue, you may have just been a bit ham-fisted in pulling away, try to replicate the issue & see what happens.

My mother has a 2014 F56 1.5 Auto which I had the use of last week and did not have the same symptoms. Car had no hesitancy when pulling away from rest and it really is a very nippy car.
