Aside from the pain in the arse of removing the plastics, do I need to code my Mini if I replace the battery proactively? R63 (2nd gen) if it makes a difference. If I do, what software do I need and it is a pain or is it just easier to get Halfords (if they indeed do coding)

Does it NEED doing or does it just optimise stop/start/charging?

From what I understand it does need coding. I think you need to go like for like with the battery and get an AGM one which are expensive.

Most garages can code them, i believe Halfords can do it as well.

I think if you dont code it does charge properly, and potentially will through up other errors as well.

You can code yourself if you have Bimmercode or Carly.

Or hook the connections to another battery with jump leads then replace it. Power is continuous throughout the swap.

It is not whether it is continuous or not, but in most modern cars the charging is ECU controlled & the system needs to be told it is a new battery or it won't charge it correctly as was said above, it will also cause other errors.

^^^^^ is the correct answer.

Intelligent battery monitor, you'll notice some connection on the earth terminal, and if so, then it will need coding. Don't assume when its replaced its coded automatically, BMW themselves failed to code my replacement, and it died after just over two years (out of warranty obvs) when I got my Indie guy to fit a new one, he plugged in his scanner, and could see from the history, the previous change wasn't registered.
