2002 Mini One Automatic Gearbox

I bought a 2002 Mini One a couple of years ago, and since I have had it, there has always been an issue with the Automatic Gearbox.
When I put the car into drive, it seems to "bang" into gear, which causes the car to jolt a little, rather than go into gear smoothly.
Is this a common thing with Mini's, and if so, what can be done about this please?
