R56 CD player not responding

Hi all,
Currently got a 2013 R56 GP which hasn’t been getting a lot of use over the winter!
Recently the stereo hasn’t been responding properly to button presses - so I can turn volume up and down, but can’t change from CD to radio, AUX etc amongst other things that involve those buttons on the facia.
Has anyone encountered this and have a possible solution?
Google-fu suggests it might be battery condition - the battery has felt “sluggish” so would a replacement remedy this, or is it a case of new battery plus something else?
Again Google-fu had a lot of quite expensive looking solutions being touted, but most threads were very old.
The car lives on my drive so using a trickle charger might be an issue, hopefully getting a garage soon-ish she can live in though!
