MINI- Road noise…
Discussion
Just been to Harrogate and back to Norwich in the missus' (new to her 2020 7k mile MINI Cooper) which I bought her for Christmas.
She seems to love it but the road/tyre noise at circa 70mph is pretty horrific!
If it wasn't a 6month old car I'd seriously be looking at fked wheel bearings. It's fitted with 185/65 Michelins so no rubber band tyres here and yes, some of it is down to the tyres but whoever signed these cars off as okay must be smoking something good.
It handles well and pulls through the gears fine but the road noise is beyond ridiculous.
Anyone else have one and found the road noise bad?

Have you checked the pressures? Are the Michelin’s run flat and what size is the wheel?
We have a Cooper S on the 18” JCW wheels with Goodyear run flats. Seems fine on the motorway.
If it were my daily I’d have the standard 17” Cooper S wheels on it. But we we’ll be changing over to standard PS4’s when the current ones wear out.

Made a mistake on tyre size, they're 175/65/15's,Michelin Green Energy Savers and standard type tyres not run flats.
Re tyre pressures they're all spot on.
Different grades of tarmac does have an effect but even on smooth stuff the noise is bad, not a car I'd want to do distance in.
The missus reckons she hasn't noticed but then again doesn't do many miles per week. It only really gets bad at 50mph+..

Got her a clubman last year. She wanted one no matter what. Tail lights & all that.
We had a test drive around town with all the traffic noise & 40mph tops.
She drove it back home. I was in the Landrover, pure luxury, the tyre noise is so quiet.
Out in the TVR engine noise pure luxury, what tyre noise.
The Mini is harsh & sounds like its running on solid rubber 18" wheels.
So Miss Daisy avoids dual carriage ways & 60mph is fast enough.
The tyre noise is excessive & you cant hear the engine.
So against her wishes when the run flats have come to an end normal tyres will be added.
How many shopping trips will that take.
Its a nice car but its spoilt by the harsh ride & noise of the tyres.

Michelin Energy Savers (non-runflats) aren't the issue - they're 68db, which isn't that noisy, and is 3db quieter than Michelin PS4s.
The issue is the inadequate amount of sound deadening fitted as standard to new MINI's, resulting in road noise at speed which is much louder than expected from a premium car, as per the OP.
We experienced exactly the same excessive road noise issue with both our MINI's, compared with our Mercedes'.
Fortunately, two additional sets of floor mats of the densest material available, added underneath the OEM velour mats supplied with our MINI's, successfully reduced the road roar at speed, down to a level where the wind noise from the A pillars and the engine noise were all about equal, on both our MINI Clubman and Cooper SD.
Hope this easily implemented soluton helps you to enjoy your new MINI to the full with reduced road roar, like we have for hundreds of thousands of miles - they're great cars.
P.S - both our Clubman & Cooper SD came with Michelin Energy Savers (non-runflats) from new, and while they are a good eco-tyre which hang on very well in enthusiastic cornering albeit with plenty of amusing tyre squeal from their harder compound, our Cooper SD has been switched to Michelin PS4 (non-runflats), which have more grip without tyre squeal, and are even better in the wet while still lasting almost as long. The extra 3db from the PS4's remains muted successfully by the extra floor mats, and is a very worthwhile upgrade, imho.
@ fieryfred - ditch the horrible & noisy runflats for some PS4's or similar asap you can, and you'll be amazed at the improvement in ride & harshness, especially if you also downsize the wheels to the smallest diameter that will fit over the brakes too. On 205/55/16s, our Cooper SD with additional floor mats, rides as smoothly and quietly as a MINI can get - HTH.

The tyres are Bridgestone Toranza 225/40/R18.
Blame me. She said i dont wont low profile tyres. So i said why did you chose that car.
She said you showed it to me & i liked it, so its your fault.
Shes not daft she was a theatre sister but the logic beats me.
If i went 17" wheels with a higher side wall e.g. 205/50/R17 that would give the same diameter.
But that would affect the TPS.
Easier just to change the tyres.
Any one else running 225/40/R18 with a recomendation for tyres.

I'm looking to buy a 2016 clubman but I noticed the road noise coming from the back. My other half has a 3 door hatchback which has no road noise. I looked at the rubber seal where the rear doors meet the rear wheel arches. In my opinion its a bad design because its just a thin piece of rubber between the outside world and the inside. Anyone else noticed this?

Do you mean this?If so, I’ve never realised noticed any noise from here. Although it does get very dirty!
What I would say is that the Clubman can seem noisier than the hatch. Now whether it actually is, I’m not sure. But you have a lot more room behind you for sounds to echo around and there is no fixed parcel shelf. Noise from the boot can therefore transfer into the cabin more easily. Put something hard in the pockets in the boot doors and you’ll hear every sound.
On the whole I don’t find mine noisy. It’s a JCW though so some extra noise is to be expected. Perhaps go for another drive and see what you think taking into account the above.
