When we bought the Cooper we also bought a new set of genuine MINI rubber mats. Lovely quality and fit and look well. However, I cannot get them looking really clean. They have a 'soft feel' surface to them that feels a bit like running your finger over 1200 wet and dry and no matter what I clean them with and how much I scrub them they look dirty. I don't want to use a dressing that makes them shiny and slippery, but would like them to look clean and a matte finish. The rest of the car is immaculate, but the mats let it down.

Anyone else had this issue and any recommendations appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I like the practicality and retro feel of the rubber mats, but have the same problem.

Have been taking them out and washing them when I do the bodywork, but they always have that dull, grey look afterwards.

Neat washing up liquid on a damp sponge should do the trick to give rubber mats a better appearance.

Thanks for the tip, much appreciated. Wow, what a difference! I used a small dry scouring sponge - the ones that are sponge one side and green scourer the other - four pea sized drops of fairy liquid rubbed in well has done exactly what I wanted. Clean looking mats without the slippery, shiny surface. Before and after photos.

Not sure what happened to the after photo, but here it is.
