As title gents. I am going to retire early next year so going to sort out the cars, so need some advice. I drive a 2017 2.0 D 5 series, my Wife’s Merc GLC 4 Matic which is on contract hire through the business will go back in March and we won’t replace it. We want to manage with one car, I say one car, the TR6 is in the garage but it’s only dry miles so will not see much action.

We will not do many miles 8k max but my worry is the trips we may well do down to Mercia in Spain over a three week period, is it going to be comfortable enough. As a normal car ie space and used as a general car ie odd trip to the tip etc it should be more than capable. What would be the best engine to choose, auto is a must. I will be looking for nearly new 5k miles max £26k budget. Over to the Pistonheads massive for some sound advice.

Definitely not. I can’t imagine 1400 miles in a mini. Your life will be ruined.
I frequently do 200 miles a day in a 5 door mini hatch and/or a countryman. It’s bearable - just. If you can do the journey in 200 mile per day chunks that would be ok. Otherwise you need something else bigger. Anything really. Preferably German. Or Swedish. That budget will Buy almost anything.

I use to have an F30 and now have a Clubman SD.
I do 25k miles a year. Apart from a slightly firm ride I find the Clubman absolutely fine.
If you went with 18” wheels and lost the run flats the ride wouldn’t be an issue.

First thing I would do is lose the RF hate the blessed things always feels like the car is going to let go on a tight corner.

I do agree it’s a big worry for a long journey, we did Spain and France numerous times in the TT Roadster and its was fine, but that was fun and loads of power as it was remapped to 320 bhp.

It looks a nice place to sit although it’s not going to be as nice as the 5 series, but they do have a fair amount of toys, gonna have to see if I can get a Cooper S on weekend test drive..
