The wife wants a clubman
Discussion
Bit of advice required. She wants a clubman because the back doors look nice.
Wants an auto because she's getting old & wants petrol because diesel is dirty ??
Wants the reversing camera because thats cool.
Prefers normal to low profile run flat tyres.
Wants the union jack tail lights.
Dont ask about colour i dare not. They just look cute.
She is no speed freak so.
Will the 1.5 be ok for running around or is the 2.0 much better.
Is the classic car with comfort pack plus ok or is it better to go for the sport.
If any brave man wants to take her shopping please do so.

My car is a 2.0 litre SD diesel but I test drive a 1.5 petrol for a weekend.
The 1.5 is a sweet engine. In the Clubman I’d describe performance as adequate rather than sprightly but if it’s being used more as a town car I’d think the 1.5 will be fine.
Comfort pack gains some useful goodies so is worth having.
All post 2018 cars have the the Union Jack lights.

Thanks for that.
She asked will it cope with the hills & dales, it should my old moggie minor did.
I took her to Malton to look at 2 19 plate cars both had the old back lights. So they where old cars before being registered.
One had 20 miles on the clock with tyres that looked like they had done 10K & enough mud inside to plant tatties. Plus a change battery light on the dash.
We walked away.
So its find a comfort plus pack 69 / 20 plate.
I dont want to give Rishi any more money than i have to. He only spends it on burgers.

Mine is just swapping from her 17 plate Cooper SD (5 door) to a 20 plate Clubman S. She’s not doing the miles to warrant a diesel any longer and wanted to replace it with another 5 door, but petrol this time.
We had a look around but found that the used cars were coming up as much on the monthlies as a new one (give or take) thanks to the lower APR for the new ones.
Whilst we were in the showroom, we took a look at the Clubmans and the added practicality (full sized rear passenger doors) as well as the barn doors opening with the key seemed to sway the other half towards this model.
Her current Mini is really well specced so that naturally had to carry over into the new one, with the digital dash being the only ‘upgrade’ to the already stacked options ticked on the new one.
I was pleasantly surprised how well it drove and it’s leagues above the Countryman for the usual Mini feel and driving characteristics.
Looking forward to its arrival in October and didn’t feel too ripped off thanks to Carwow and the deals offered up through there.
Edited to add - I didn’t like the 1.5 in the Countryman hybrid I had for 3 months. The 2.0 feels a much better power plant, not a big shove like in the diesel but smoother out of junctions and a much better noise overall.

Reading this brought me a sense of deja vu, pretty much the same situation we were in last year. Wife went from a 2017 Cooper SD (albeit 3 door) to a Clubman Cooper S, with the auto gearbox. Went with 18" wheels and the ride is pretty smooth and comfortable. Plenty of poke, although obviously not as quick as my Focus ST, it never feels slow, I guess the auto gearbox helps on that front. If you can go for the upgraded seats, very comfy for long journeys and the heating is probably the best I've had We had a look around but found that the used cars were coming up as much on the monthlies as a new one (give or take) thanks to the lower APR for the new ones.

I don't know what it is with the Union Jack lights, as per the OP, my wife wanted those as well
'the' wife has one. She 'chopped in' her LR Discovery 4 for it. We were expecting it to be a lot less practical but surprisingly, it has been really versatile.
Seats 2 adults and three teenagers perfectly well for a 2 hour drive to the coast for example.
The 1.5 petrol engine is fine. 'Zesty' would be a good adjective. Never feels underpowered.
It feels every inch the competent small BMW family runaround.
Mini & 2+2 sports car. A surprisingly complete 2 car garage.

Feels good to know it’s not just me having to spec and sort a car as if I were the dealer then! Pretty enjoyable task all said and done and the dealers were attentive enough during the process. I don't know what it is with the Union Jack lights, as per the OP, my wife wanted those as well
This one on order has the Exclusive package (on a conference call so can’t check if I’ve used the right terminology there) and I think they’re the same as current ones - not too shabby really and covered in their Mini You leather.
The seat heating is good although it’s not as adjustable and ferocious as the cheese melting 5 stagers in my Cayenne.
Union Jack lights, British Racing Green and a 70 plate seems to be the main focus for conversation when the Mini is brought up. Seems like on this occasion the boy done good...
I was in the good books for one day when i bought her a new washing machine.
I was waiting for my reward after telling her the advice on PH.
Wrote down the options & what to look for & have booked 2 test drives for tomorrow.
Ooh great she said will they have the union jack lights. Yes dear.
Are they comfort plus & automatic. Yes dear.
First time i have come across rear lights selling a car.

Just ordered the wife a Clubman JCW, white silver, red roof/caps/stripes, heads up and panaramic roof. Looked at a Cooper S but once specd to the same level as the JCW it cost almost the same due to the discounts on the JCW.
Nicely done. Mine just told me half way through the JCW test drive she feared for her licence with the speeds it could do so wanted to go for the S. Her car, her choice (not that I’m bitter about it or anything)

I use to have a M140i that my partner was scared to drive. I've got a 420i GC now and the running costs are the same as the 140 so gone all out with the JCW. It has almost every option ticked as standard, performance when needed is a bonus. Her car, her choice (not that I’m bitter about it or anything)
Seems to be a common problem! We have has this just over a year (bought 2nd hand from Mini Park Lane), it is a 68 reg but does not have the union jack rear lights (they were added to the Clubman later than some other models so best to check on that if it is a deal breaker).
Petrol Cooper S, automatic (latest bmw gear box), nice car, good to drive, quite economical, can't fault it really. Some good deals to be had if you buy previously owned.

Result. Mine’s a 4.5 V8 Cayenne so I guess we need one vaguely economical car in the household philcray said:

I always felt these sat quite high. The arch gap looks too big for me.
The test drive went well apart from, how do you turn the rear wipers on & turn the traffic & travel off. I am trying to concentrate.
Then it was when i get my new Mini Arrgghh
You can book the NC5oo & i will drive the flag all over Scotland & dont you mention Rectumendum.
And i miss the dogs, but 2 new ones will fit in the back.
And they can jump in dead easy.
And i can open both doors at a touch of the button.
And i can get loads of shopping in the back.
And the women from the WI can get in & out even with replacemant knees & hips.
And i can use it as a manual in the snow.
And i want the sport seats & the disco lights.
So we where left waiting for 20 minutes by the salesman thinking where has he gone.
Then head honcho shows up & gave us the blurb about minor damage protection, life time paint & TLC return to invoice.
We lost the will to live & left with our ears ringing.
She said what have i ever done to deserve that torture.
Then jasey came to the rescue with this.
Ahh Bat Man i want those spirts lifted.
