I’m sure this has been asked a thousand times but could I find the answer when searching?
No!! Ha

I’ve just bought a 2002 Mini Cooper as a cheap runaround - it’s ok, it was cheap, pretty good condition and....... it was cheap, yeh, I know I said that twice!

Anyway, I’ve only got 1 key for it.
Can I just get another cut or does it need coding to car?
I’m hoping that it’s too old for that and I can simply buy a blank and get it cut ??

I think the key is £150 from Mini, there are some key cutters who can code them though.

I popped into BMW to get another Key and it was £168 for a new key fully coded.

You can remove the immobiliser chip ( little grey blob) from the key you’ve got and tape it under the steering wheel, you can then buy a cheap key off eBay and just get the blade cut. The remote won’t work on the new key and you’ve lost some security. i.e. a thief could quite easily hot wire the car, but you can lock the car with a key and start it and have a spare.
