Mini one R57 cam chain problems
Discussion
I stupidly bought a 2010 mini one convertible for the wife with the standard 1.6 n14 engine just before lockdown from a garage.
It's done 82k and looked good for its age. But it was noisy on Start up which then settled down after a few minutes.
The wife was desperate for the car so I did the deal after doing a quick bit of research which confirmed that the engines are indeed not very refined. I insisted that a new mot was put on the car and he gave us a 3 month warranty including wear and tear.
I got back and after doing the belated research which I normally do the right way round! And I found out about the 'death rattle' on these engines.
The rattle has got worse, despite minimal mileage . It's worse than any example of it I can find on you tube. (I have also had to replace both rear drop links and the battery. I still have the boot lock to do which also has failed) all in less than 200 miles.
It also seems that the warranty is useless after doing a little a research. A full service history is needed to claim! So I'm not holding my breath if the tensioner/chain fails.
I'm calling the warranty company tomorrow as it looks as though the tensioner has failed judging by the sound of the chain slapping around.
If I don't get any luck then I will replace the chain myself. Can anyone recommend a good cam chain kit and the cam locking tools ?
The tools I've seen have a massive difference in price .
