My son’s 2009 Mini One 1.4 has just lunched 2nd year on his 6 speed box.

Assume the only viable option is a reconditioned box? Really frustrating as only just had the clutch replaced 6 weeks ago.

The car has nearly 90k on it though so not even sure I replacement box will be viable

Any advice appreciated

Are you sure its nothing to do with the selector, the gearboxes on the R56 are usually very good.

I’m not, but it only appears to be affecting 2nd gear - all the others are ok - would a selector problem only cause an issue on 1 gear?

Could do, does it go into second when coming down the box ? What happens if you double declutch ? Will it go into second without the engine running

So it does go inTo 2nd sometimes, and drives fine when it is, so suggests the gearbox itself is ok. But doesn’t like going into 2nd, either up or down, unless you get the revs exactly right, so hopefully it’s a selector issue. Will get it into a mechanic and fingers crossed.
Thanks for your help

My mechanic has confirmed the synchro on 2nd has gone. Usually the would fit a reconditioned box, but that is more or less the cost of the car. Have found a 2nd hand box on eBay with a 3 mth warranty and will just get that swapped out.

Try Minitec, we had a used box from them for an R53, they supply some on an exchange basis.

Is double de-clutching an option? Bought a cheap Saab 9000 years ago because of no synchro on 2nd. Took me most of the journey home to get used to it, did it automatically from then on!

just to finish this one up - found a 2nd hand gearbox from a 50k car with 90 day warranty for £180 - cost another £500 to get it fitted along with a new CV joint as that had perished. All good now - thanks for the info
