I found this on top of the engine, but what is it for? It has cutout so it goes on an edge somewhere. But nowhere seems to be absent a seal.

I would guess its the strip that sits on the leading edge of the bonnet.

That was my first assumption, but there was no clean patch where a seal would have fitted and also it would be visible from the front of the car. I don't recall seeing a seal. Here is the front of a Countryman.

Open the bonnet and look up, I was thinking in the inside edge

Done that, there doesn't seem to be one. It looks like the bonnet lip is rolled so there isn't a sharp edge. To be fair though I was looking in a partially lit garage in sub-zero temperatures with only a cotton shirt on. So my observational skills may not have been tip top.

Had a quick look on the wife's countryman and the only thing I can see that it might be is a seal that runs directly underneath the headlight.

Not sure how it would end up on the engine - but worth a look smile

We have a winner.

I think I know what's happened now.

We had a smarty repair done on that corner (by Mini). Someone has taken off the seal and not refitted it.

Thank you everyone.
