I hope someone else has had similar issues and can point me in the right direction as my car has been off the road for a year now and nobody seems to be able to fix the problem!

Basically when you try to start the car by pushing the button it initially starts gets to around 1000 RPM then starts to fall below than and kind of makes a chugging sound and the car shakes a little until the engine stops. Whilst doing this I would try to apply the accelerator to get it going but nothing would happen.
After about 15/20 attempts I could finally get it to start normally. I would always know when it was about to start normally because you could hear the sound of the fuel whooshing past the passenger seat making its way to the engine.

When it does start normally however I felt the car had lost its power and wasn’t quick as before. Also was getting loud popping noises coming from the exhaust with some dark smoke coming out of it.

I have had a mechanic looking at it for the past year albeit on a part time basis as haven’t really needed to car but he’s decided he’s out of ideas. I don’t have a full list of what he’s tried yet but just thought I’d post on here to see if anyone has had similar issues and know what it could be straight away.

Thanks in Advance!

Several points for you.

You say R53 but IIRC the R53 was 02/06 Mini Cooper S, are you sure that is what it is?

A few pointers also:

You say you THINK it has been done - check & find out how?

Fuel pressure at the fuel rail tells you, simples.

If it is the later turbo get a compression & leak-down test done, and get the inlet valves inspected either by removing the manifold or getting the endoscope out.

Can you hear the fuel pump run to prime the system when turning the key before starting?

sorry I tried to edit the topic title but it wouldn’t let me. It’s the R56 I do believe. Mini Cooper S 2007

The mechanic changed the fuel pump with another working fuel pump from another mini as didn’t want to buy a new one if that wasn’t the problem and still had the issue

‘If it is the later turbo get a compression & leak-down test done, and get the inlet valves inspected either by removing the manifold or getting the endoscope .. it does have a turbo so will get this checked

‘Can you hear the fuel pump run to prime the system when turning the key before starting?’

No you can only hear it after several attempts.

I have a bmw and mini specialist near me recently opened so will take it there. Just wanted to give them some sort of idea what might be wrong before I go.

Must be an R56. 57 plate & a starter button?

Can of worms of a car. If you're not a DIYer. then find a way to get it to a garage, get it scanned & go from there.
