Mini Experts (I am not) please tell me all, any good?

What to pay? (circa 25,000 miles)

What to look out for/known issues?

Must have options?

Someone mentioned even more fun to be had with a DMS chip once out of warranty?

TIA.

Not an expert but we have had ours 2 years and no problems, good fun to drive when I get the chance that is, the one we purchased had the options the garage had requested which was quite extensive but probably would recommend at least the chilli pack which I seem to recall include the sports seats and better wheels.
Just remembered they changed both rear callipers under warranty at the first service as both bleed nipples snapped off smile

All I can say is that you will really enjoy it and you will find it great fun, I have a 2017 Cooper S(from new) and I absolutely love it on a back road around the twisties.

Options wise it is down to personal preference, my must haves were LED headlights/heated seats/nav/upgraded stereo/leather seats.

I specced none run flats too and it makes a big difference from what I read. I wish I had the JCW's brakes though because they are really poor on the Cooper S.

Thanks for the replies.

I want to get something that is fun in the twisties without it having to be going at warp factor 27 which is increasingly difficult on the UK roads these days. Thought about having another 911 and drove a 991 but had to be really going some before I felt connected to the thing. However fom the very brief drive I had in the Works (in monsoon conditions!) if felt great fun.

Can they do long distances without too much trouble as well as I plan some UK / Euro hoons.

Mine has been fine when I've been on a long journey in it, obviously its not their forte but they are happy to do both.

I had a 2016 JCW from new, sold it in march this year. Did 40,000 miles in just under 3 years. It was my first car after opting out of my company scheme. I loved mine, didnt find it too tiring on long trips - even after my job changed half way through ownership meaning I was doing 400 motorway miles a week. If it had radar cruise and auto, it would have been as good as anything.

I deliberately got the 17” wheels / non-runflats to improve ride and overall handling experience. Had the HK sounds and the valved sports exhaust. Apart from tyres, it cost me nothing to run under the mini tlc pack, didnt even get through a set of pads in that time. Averaged at 42mpg too (50+ on a steady run) which some may say was a bit sad given what it was. Engine is the standout feature, and its ability to slide around deserted roundabouts at semi-sensible speeds. An absolute hoot to drive - you’ll love it!

Interestingly, I sold initially to go to an M2 Comp but when I eventually test drove, I didnt like it after the Mini, felt remote, disconnected and frankly dull in terms of handling giggles, albeit steets ahead in straight line spped. So I bought a shed for the commute to see if i liked it (I did) and now waiting for my 911 (992) which definitely didn’t feel dull and disconnected!

Would not hesitate to have the F56 JCW back in the stable, brilliant brilliant car.

I have the 17" wheels/non runflat combo on my MCS and I find it really compliant on a back road too.

I love the handling/fun factor of the MCS and I guess that the JCW is totally awesome in comparison(quicker/better noise/better brakes etc).

I don't want to swap it but my Mrs hates it and she won't drive or even travel in it(good in some respects and I can drive like a tit!) so I guess that it will go at some stage. She can't understand why I love it so much and she just sees it as a crappy shopping car!! frown

Great feedback, thank you - you are talking me into it guys!

Does around £16grand seem about right for a 2.5yr old 25,000 miler? I guess it will have done a fair bit of it's depreciation already? The one I am looking at has a reasonable amount of spec including H&K (I like my tunes) although notable options missing pano roof/heated seats

If your buying it for giggles, you dont need much apart from hk sounds and the pro-exhaust! Cruise essential imho for touring. Standard seats / interior are excellent, just watch for stitching coming undone where the seat base meets the backrest. The enhanced seats come with a poorly designed centre storage console that gets in the way of the handbrake. I had the additional dials above the steering wheel - boost and oil pressure which were cool but rare i think.

Sold mine on 40k in immaculate condition to a dealer for £14.2k three months ago. White / red roof mirrors. They had sold it within 10 days. Miss it, but new toys beckon.

Can't really comment on the JCW (other than the fact Mrs ZS wants one smile), but we have a Cooper SD. Our 2 main regrets with it (and echoing other posters advice on here) is that we didn't spec it with LED headlights and upgraded audio.

I believe that the Pro Exhaust can be retro fitted(not 100% though) and it comes with a Bluetooth switch to open the flaps which makes it much louder. There was a chap on here though who swapped his exhaust on his F56 Cooper S for the standard JCW exhaust and he was very happy with it just to give you some idea. smile

The one you are looking at sounds a lovely spec to me.

Is it the one for sale at Clinkard? If so that does look very smart! cool

I like that a lot. smile

I really like the detail differences with the JCW to the Cooper S...the difference with the brakes/gearstick/rev counter/speedo/pedals/seats/rear bodykit etc. It is making me want one! biggrin

My 2018 JCW isn't quite as much fun in the twisties as was my Boxster or 996 Turbo. The car is really hamstrung with the run flats. But twisties time is very rare now and I'm too cheap to toss still good tires even if they are run flats.

Have not had my JCW out on a long drive yet, a long drive in my experience with my other cars is a road trip that has me driving hundreds of miles in a day and several thousand in a couple of days like I have done numerous times with my other cars. Based on my time in the JCW on the freeway during my 30 mile work commute I suspect the tire noise and the short wheel base would result in a less enjoyable drive than what I experienced with either of my Porsche cars.

I will add though the engine's power curve/torque curve would make short work of the miles and any hills or mountains if your long distance hooning involves significant changes in elevation. And its gas mileage would be impressive. My day to day usage has the car averaging 30mpg. On the open highway I bet this could get to 35mpg maybe higher. (My other current car, a Hellcat, averages around 15mpg when used for my work commute and maybe (maybe) 20mpg on the open highway.)

Might caution you regarding brakes. The brake warning light came on and the problem proved to be worn out rear brake pads, well, one worn down the sensor. This at under 17K miles. And with very little time in the twisties. What I found to be the "problem" is i was a bit overly exuberant with my corning and this was activating some safety nanny which works by applying among other things the rear brakes. I found this out by disabling this stability control and was rather surprised how often it was activated. I didn't think I was being that wild with the car, but I guess my 15 years of Porsche experience kind of spoiled me regarding cornering speed and old habits are hard to break.

Regarding the car be sure to give it a thorough used car check out which among other things should include a 15 mile test ride followed by a 15 mile test drive. During the ride portion you can focus on the car how it runs, handles, rides, drives, etc. During the drive portion over the same section of road you can then experience the car first hand.

No need to try to confirm the factory's 0 to 60 time nor the top speed but you do want to have the driver demo the car's acceleration up through a couple of gears to just confirm the engine can pull good from off idle all the way to red line then after the engine can settle down into a normal idle.

After the test ride and drive then exercise every system from lights to A/C to ensure all work

I've done 450 mile round trips in mine and no problems.
Comfortable and if you're crunching Mway miles and use Green mode (sorry to swear but ideal for Mway cruising) you'll get 40-44 to the gallon, I get 42mpg at a steady 85mph.
