Mini wont go in to first gear.

Hi. Im looking for some help. I have a 05 mini cooper. It wont go into first gear. All others gears are fine. If i disconnect the neutral cable from the selector on the top on gearbox. The left one as you look in to the engine bay. It will go into first gear fine and i have driven up and down the road all all gears are there. Pop the neutral cable back on and cant get into first gear...anyone else had this happen ?..thanks for any help,,,oh the cables all look to be i good condition with no play on the ends. Thanks.
