I bought a R56 Cooper S yesterday - it's great, but on examination the radiator fan doesn't appear to run. There's no sign of overheating but without a temperature gauge it's difficult to know what temp the coolant is at. Can't figure out the "secret" menu on the OBC other than it's something to do with adding up the digits in the VIN displayed!

Any thoughts? Temp sensor?

Fuses are ok, and have swapped the I and II relays round.

Assumption is that when the a/c is on, the fan should run - correct?

Part right, if the AC is on, the fan runs to keep the system cooler if/when required.

Generally with everything fully up to temp & the AC on low it will come on for a few seconds every few minutes.

Doesn't appear to be coming on at all. I would imagine with the engine hot (after a run) and then left idling in 15deg outside temp, the fan would kick in?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid and should simply drive it!

Not sure at 15 outside, your min AC setting is 16 IIRC, so maybe give it till it gets a bit warmer before condemning it unless someone else knows better.

And before anyone chips in saying "outlet temp should be 6 deg C" yes I know that but I think min temp setting on the AC for cabin temp is 16 deg C.

You could always short the switch out to see if it starts up.

Actually, is the AC coming on?

There's a (small) change in RPM when switching it on but it's not ice cold.

Have ordered an dongle thing for TorquePro app which seems to read coolant temp.

You might need a regas, and I am not sure if that would make it come on more or less.

As I said above your outlet temp when set to min should be 6 deg C, which should be pretty much the same temperature as your fridge.

Well it turns out the fan does run.

I got a bluetooth OBD dongle and Torque app and the temperature sits around 105deg, obviously dropping down into the 90s when moving (from the logging, not reading it whilst driving!)

Parked up, it creeps up but not above 110deg - at which point I turned off the engine and lo and behold the fan was running.

Pretty strong hot coolant smell but perhaps that's just the reality of a small engine bay and a hot engine. Will probably drain and refill the coolant.

Its a 2 stage fan, the first one should come on when the AC is on, the second should come on around 105degs - if you have Mini connected and Nav you can download the app and you can view the temp gauge

Mine doesn't work either, Mini want something like £230, Euros list them, they are around £100.

Definitely doesn't run when the AC is on. Will test out the warranty...

Have you actually tested whether the AC is on yet?

Unless the AC is actually on & actually cooling the fan won't come on, as I said you may need a regas & if so that could be the issue.

Regas Friday - on the KwikFit "no cooler no pay" approach!

Mine had plenty of gas ... I assume kwik fit check for leaks and pressure test the system first.

So they gassed it, and then ungassed it before it ungassed itself hehe

He said the pressure test was fine but it leaked with the gas in. But apparently it all worked whilst the gas was in. So back next week to investigate!

Did they put dye in so they can trace the source of the leak easier next week?

It'll probably be the condenser.

So prior to pressure testing did they check to see what volume of gas was in the system, when pressure testing it how long did they leave the pressure applied before attempting to regas it ?

No idea, I left it with them at 8:30 and returned at 4:30

The leak was coming from, according the the chap, from front left as you stand in front of the car looking at the bonnet.

my car runs nicely motorway running fully topped up with oil and coolant but after a while it starts to run hot and i can't hear the fan and then the yellow engine warning light comes on feels like it is running hot, bonnet is too hot to touch for example.

its a 2010 car, recently had new alternator but i've been advised the battery could do with changing - possibly connected? 4000 miles to next service, occassionally the car on ramp light comes on at start up.

So is there a question there?
