Daughter has a mini one with standard 5 spoke alloys, wheels have the usual corrosion so I looked in to changing them for another set.. same size etc
Thought I'd just check with insurer who said if the replacement wheels are not std mini issue then they are classed as a modification and wanted an extra 160 quid on the premium.
New set of mini wheels is 800 quid.. the fox ones are about 300
Anyone else had this problem ? Ive spoke to underwriter and even sent the pics but they are 100% adamant any non oem wheel is a modification and they want an 10% uplift on premium

Unfortunately not at all uncommon, different insurers see things differently though.

The easy answer is a set/replacement oem wheel/s from ebay, or a refurb on your wheels for around £150/set.

Why not refurb what you have?

I think she wants to have black ones on and a different style .. I've said today if paying extra for insurance to go for a bigger wheel and make It a proper modification so maybe go to 17s so she's going to save up and do a de chrome black roof and the wheels ...
We just thought 15 inch to 15 inch isn't really a modification

Go to 17s and ruin the comfy 15" ride.

I'm tempted to agree on the ride quality using 16 instead of 17, the cooper s we have is on16s and is a good ride quality

Agreed on R56.
* 15" steels for winter very comfortable and kerb friendly
* 16" alloys for summer, better turn-in than the 15s.
* 17" test driven but rejected as they tramlined on the poor roads I tend to drive.

I'd get the originals re-vamped, that extra money to the insurance company will bleed every year.

I once specced the OEM vipers on a Mini (£99) and the insco wanted £100 bump on the premium. It wasn't the value but the 'sporty' intent, i.e. modifiers' claim risk is higher. I did manage to talk them out of that (i.e. they wanted the business and my birthday cake effects global warming) but changed companies the following year as it was clear they'd rolled it (silently) back in again.

Biting the bullet it seems
Even if we paint the originals black it's the same 160 extra, they have agreed if we pay for the wheels mod they won't charge extra for de chrome to black of window surrounds and lights.
Can't see point of spending 200 quid to refurb when I get brand new set for 300 quid and I can prob sell these on 3bay for 25 to 40 each.
Daughters happy .. I'm a few hundred lighter ... again

Next time look for an insurer like Greenlight who cover mods for free!

Are you sure the "fox" wheels will fit the hubs?

I ask cause when I bought some steel "winter" wheels for my Mini they wanted to be sure that the wheels they supplied would fit properly as not all wheels will correctly fit the hubs. They checked VRN and serial number of car before ordering. They were very particular about this, maybe the price difference?

And, then pay it again next year, and the year after, and the year after!

No brainer really?

I know what you’re saying but I’m hoping we can get a much better deal next year, it’s her first insurance as she only passed in January so we are limited especially when it comes to mods but that 160 is declaring the wheels, de chrome, tints, cooper rear spoiler so it’s not too bad
