Hi All,

I have a 2014 64 reg Cooper S. Bought it from Mini Approved only 4 months ago and have done 4500 miles. Just ticked over 70,000 miles 2 days ago.

I have taken it back to Mini twice now as intermittently when in stop start traffic the engine idles rough. It’s keeps on “spluttering” or feels like a cough and then idles fine. There’s no routine, just does it whenever it feels like it! Mini aren’t really too interested, every time i book an appointment it’s at least a Months wait just for them to tell me they can’t find an issue. So I have an appointment for the 29th and planning on letting them keep it until it’s fixed. Could anybody point me to what it could be? I’ve changed the Spark Plugs but not much difference, I’ve read online the early B48’s had an issue with the Ignition coil wiring harnesses??

The next issue is, recently the clutch has began to feel very strange. It has a lot of vibration through the pedal, and with the clutch depressed and car out of gear when you rev it to about 2k there’s a very evident grinding feeling... have a feeling it’s on the way out! I know they’ll try and pull the wear and tear card and blame it on me, has anyone every had a clutch through the Approved used warranty.

Any help? Thanks

The misfiring sounds like the HPFP, it should leave a low pressure fault code. The vibration through the clutch pedal sounds like the dual mass flywheel is on its way out.

Thanks for that, I’m guessing HPFP is the High Pressure Fuel Pump? There’s no fault codes on it, they’ve scanned it. It always runs lumpy, but It’s especially bad just after the engine starts back up eg after start/stop, as soon as you put the Heated Screen or something along those lines it raises the idle speed and runs smoothly.

Do minis of this generation still have HPFP issues or is this speculation particular to OPs problem?

The f56 use a bmw 2.0 lump so would potentially have it's own set of issues not that I've seen many like the OP

Dropped it off on Tuesday and they still have it. They have recognised there’s an issue but are unsure as to what it is, Currently with the Head Technician who’s running tests. I mentioned it could potentially be the fuel pump as mentioned on here and that idea wasn’t dismissed.

They currently think it’s most likely an Injector Fault/ Leak. So it’s going to be a lot of trial and error. Glad I have an Approved used warranty! Unfortunately I have to live with a rather boring Cooper D as I’m only 20 and Insurance won’t allow me on a like for like Cooper S, shame as the apprentice was just about to sign me over a JCW laugh !

I’ve read a bit into this and yes it was an affected car. As it’s an August 2014 build. They have assured me the recall was done and it’s not related.

Oh so they actually insured you on a courtesy car...?

I got my Cooper S at 19 and it was into the dealer for a total of 6 weeks in the first year - they told me I had to arrange my own insurance on the courtesy cars as 'They don't insure under 21s'. Still fks me off as I shelled out 500 quid in temporary vehicles being added to my policy as I needed to drive to work!

Best they gave me was a Paceman SD all4. Felt rather spritely with 4wd dumping the clutch at traffic lights.

Back on topic. Mine is on 26k and it does have the occasional splutter on cold mornings, idle is rough if the climate control isn't turned on - been the same since 6k. If the clutch is indeed on the way out I can't imagine they'll agree to replace it under warranty - sorry! They'll just trot out the mileage as well as wear and tear as excuses, "Cooper S' tend to be driven enthusiastically as they are a performance variant.' rolleyes

Clutches aren't horrendous on these, if you get it done at a Mini specialist I'd estimate £500.

Yep! There was a bit of confusion but they eventually signed one over to me. Best thing was this is how they gave it to me without informing me of any previous damage!

Just an update, they decided not to replace the Injectors (most likely to save themselves a bit of money!) and instead carry out an adaptation. Which hasn’t worked...

I called them a week ago and spoke to my advisor who’s looked after me since the start of the issue. Told me she would talk to BMW and see if they would fund the Injectors without a code on the ECU ... a week later and haven’t heard back. Are all BMW/Mini Dealers this useless!?

I use MINI Sytner Solihull, its just round the corner from work.

I cannot recommend them enough, far and away the best service department I have used.
