From memory, a larger intercooler, 17% reduction pulley and a new airbox gave impressive figures

There was debate about wether a remap was needed though

Any specific intercoolers or air boxes?

To get near 250 you'll need pulley, intercooler, manifold, cam, injectors and tune.
My R53 with the above (exc manifold) hit about 235.

I had a 15% pulley and didn't need additional cooling on the road. Think that was 200bhp or so.
17% and upwards a intercooler is generally advised (although some people disagree I believe). Airtec are the cheapest established make but popular and do the job.

Oh and just get an orranje airbox. In fact orranje are a great place for parts, really good service and usually competitive.

Worth looking out for the eBay specials... if you can still get them. They're heavily rumoured (research was done!) that they're made in the same factory as the Airtec ones, but without the branding, and go for £60-100 rather than £400! I got one and it's been spot on (with a 17% pulley)

As said above to get even close to 250 you need:

Cat or Newman camshaft
Bigger injectors
Decat tubular exhaust manifold
15 or 17% pulley
Bigger intercooler
A decent intake
A remap from someone like 1320MINI

Mine has all that and has run 214 at the wheels at 1320.

There’s a good couple of grand there to fit it all properly and you’ll want to upgrade the brakes before you do all that as the standard set up is borderline on standard power.

Worth it though when you can go lotus chasing. Skip to 2:30 https://youtu.be/3KbsuozQvwU

I’m aiming for 300 at the crank eventually but that means headwork with some big valves, port matched inlet and outlets, forged internals and a Harrop TVS900 supercharger kit from the land down under. That’s gonna be at least another £6k.
