A month ago I bought a 2014 MINI Cooper D which had covered 37K miles and has a full main dealer history. It was a private sale.

I've done 2K miles in the last month and over the past week the car has been popping out of first gear. At first I thought it was user error, having not put it in gear properly, but it appears not. The gearbox is also noticably whining in first and second gear.

I've found a lot of people with same issue when searching the MINI forums, resulting in new gear boxes and clutches.

The problem is mine's no longer under warranty and since it was bought privately, I've no recourse. I can't imagine MINI will want to know.

So what do you reckon? Get shut and PX against something else? I'd imagine if the gearbox gives up I'll be looking at a £1K bill.

Low mileage and full MiNi service history - you probably have a good chance of goodwill from mini for that

Thanks. Hoping so. It's been suggested I get a gearbox oil change to see if that helps.

If not it'll have to go into the main dealer for a fault find and on a wing and a prayer they'll help.

I’d be tempted to give the main dealer a chance first- if it’s a known issue with the early f56 then they will be more likely to give assistance. And if that fails - then spend some money on an oil change

Also- as it’s low mileage - why not take out mini extended warranty - monthly cost won’t be much. Then wait till it gets worse or breaks and taken it in

Thanks a lot.

Concerned that if I take it in first and a problem's identified, I then won't be able to get the cover as it'll be a known issue.

For £300 a year and a £100 excess I can get a warranty covering a claim of up to £5K for

Gearbox: All internally lubricated components, including but not limited to the following:
Gears, shafts, synchroniser hubs and baulk rings, selector shafts and selector forks, internal bearings and bushes, oil pump, valve and valve block, clutches and brake bands, governor, torque
converter, modulator valve, gearbox sensors, excluding external linkages.

Maybe best to get the warranty anyhow. I'll be doing up to 25K miles a year in it.
