Wipers don't stop

Hi all,
I'm new to the Mini forum but a regular on the TVR S section.
I recently boiught an '02 plate Cooper and knew that there was a problem with the wipers not parking correctly.
This has now escalated to them not stopping at all. Sometimes they can be stopped by flipping the wash/wipe but not always.
When this happens, turning the engine off has no effect. I have to disconnect the battery to get them to give up.
Could a relay be stuck open?
I've read posts about the body control module being suspect but I'd rather start with the motor - I had a Z4 with a wiper parking problem and that was resolved by cleaning grease off the motor internals.
If there are any tips or hints you can give on motor removal and or testing I'd be grateful.
