So about a week ago, the Heater in our Countryman S stopped blowing out hot air, odd I thought, but not driven it much since, decided to investigate this morning and there coolant reservoir is empty, I don't have any warning lights for coolant issues, so I would suggest its not totally empty, and it was fine when serviced 4 months ago.

I'll fill up later, but I assume the two are related, I can't see any obvious leaks, and can't see any water on the floor after its been stood for a while.

Common fault for these?

Thermostat housing? Common fault.

Mine has recently been replaced as coolant reservoir kept emptying and the car didn't provide any warning lights or indication there was an issue. Tell tale for me was the waft of a hot engine when parkingup and getting out of the car. Lucky not to lunch it I guess.

So, in other words you haven't checked the coolant level in 4 months?

Servicing isn't the only part of car ownership that is required to keep it running well.

This is a check that should be carried out weekly, along with other fluid levels & tyre pressures.

Look to be honest, in my classic mini I would check the coolant every ten minutes, but in a 4 year old modern car, I don't expect to run into such issues, but I'll try much harder next time for you!

Another PH at its finest post right there!

Have a look for tell tail signs of antifreeze corrosion around the gearbox bellhousing, just below the thermostate.

Firstly, contrary to what you may or (clearly) may not believe 4 year old cars do break down.

Secondly, don't try harder for me, I couldn't care less if you cream cracker your engine for the want of a bit of preventative maintenance rather than leaving it until it needs breakdown maintenance.

Could be as simple as 2 pipes rubbing and thus leaking coolant. I had the same a couple of weeks ago no heating coolant very low. Pipes replaced under warranty. Car had only been in to mini a few weeks before for a new starter motor.
